SX/SXi/SXi Pro Late-day failure

Ok i have a 88 650sx and for the last few times i have gone out to the lake my ski has been acting up AFTER riding fine for the 1st 2 hours. Basically it runs fine then it bogs down and will die if the throttle is depressed all the way, although i can ride it ok at lower rpms.

Does anyone know what could be happening?

I thought it might be overheating issues???? because it only happens after being ridden for a few hours. Im just not sure, any ideas would help.

Thanks-TS

2 hours equals a tank of gas too. Getting enough fuel? Any water in your tank? I would think it would overheat sooner would it not?

First make sure you start teh day with a fresh battery. Take a voltage meter and measure the voltage without the engine running and with it running. Then after ridign all day when the ski starts acting up, measure teh voltages again.

If they are way different as in the battery being low, pull off your flywheel cover and flywheel. Check your stator for broken wires or loose coils.

My friend's 650 SX did the exact same thing. It would run great for awhile but then after a few hours, it would die as soon as you grabbed a handful of throttle. But it would still idle fine.

We tried everything except for the stator. After removing the flywheel, it only took one look to see what teh problem was. Both the coils were loose and wiggled. A new old stock stator off of eBay for 200 bucks and it ran like new again!

Nope, got a whole roll of duct tape around that sucker, and it seems to be holding for now. Got an offer for one down in ventura but cant head down there for a few weeks so it will have to wait. Its cool tho it will give me some time to install a limiting rope and maybe 2 footstraps, probably just one, and head down there to try to see if i can get inverted. Also am looking for some engine mounts seeing as my right 2 are broken, but its been like that for a bit, so i think it can wait.

I would look into your plug wires as well. My 650SX needed them cut back as did my friends. First make sure you have enough slack in your plug wires, then depending on what type of teminals/ plug boots you have, unscrew or pull your boots off. Cut the wire back an inch or two and reattach.

You may also check your fuel lines for kinks of blockage, especially your fuel vent line & valve, make sure this is working correctly. It should only flow one direction; towards the tank.
