Legality of stand up skis?

So this might be a dumb question. Forgive me. I actually can’t find any information on this at all which I find weird. Maybe I’m not positive what to even search for? So my dilemma is, I want to get either an X2, MX1, or even a Krash reaper. I don’t ever plan to race, I just want to ride at my lake and have some fun. I come from a motocross background so naturally I want a fixed steering ski. Apart from the X2, the other skis would be new. My fear or lack of understanding of the laws has me confused. So if most of these skis that are new are for “competition use only” then can I not ride them recreationally? I realize it may also depend on the state and also the individual body of water. I emailed Krash and had mentioned that I saw somewhere that most Yamaha dealers won’t let you buy a Superjet without a IJSBA membership or competition license. That doesn’t seem like it’s too difficult but Krash told me if I could buy a Superjet in my state then I should be good with there ski because it’s under the same competition epa standard as the Superjet. Has anyone titled and registered a “competition only” ski and just riden it recreationally? Insurance? Any weird laws I’m missing? I’d prolly ride it on lake Hartwell in GA and also in FL in the ocean. I’m just not sure what sorta snags I get trying to register a competition only ski for use on a lake or in the ocean in FL. I’m not even really sure where I would find this information.

Any help with this would be really appreciated!

As fro Yamaha, The "Competition Use Only" is just part of the Grandfather status to be able to still be sold. The 2 Stroke YZ's have the same stickers..... Some dealers will require you to purchase an IJSBA License. (About $70.00 or so), Some will let it slide........... You can still get it registered in your state............

Thank you for the replies everyone. It’s sort of a question I couldn’t figure out myself and figured well someone who’s riding I’m sure knows.

So from what I’m gathering, I shouldn’t have any issues just getting one, using a bill of sale to get a title and then registering the ski correct? Just don’t want any issues with the DNR. I’ll have to check if there’s any rules on lake Hartwell but my father has a mercury 150 outboard that makes the dock look likes it’s on fire every time he starts it so I cant imagine I’ll have any issues.

It just throws me off because you have things like dirt bikes that are competition use only and you certainly can’t get those registered to ride other than like a couple rare states like Arizona. So it was all just a bit confusing on how strict water registration stuff is.

You will have zero issues here in Wisconsin. Find the stand up guy at the dealership and get to know him, he'll usually give you a discount if you show genuine interest. My buddy rides a 2014, and never had to join IJSBA.

Rod's Ride On Powersports, here in La Crosse, always took money off the top when I got pricing on my SXR. He knew I had a 550.

Your good to go on any ski you choose. GA is not a title state for skis. Just need a bill of sale to get it registered then your good to go. Lake Hartwell does not have a two stroke ban or anything like that do you are also good to go there. For the aftermarket hulls you will need a HIN, everything else is game on.

I know for a fact that used 2-cycle jet skis may be registered in California, a zebra muscle fee and sticker must also be purchased.

Certain California bodies of water, including Lake Tahoe will only permit 2-cycles if they are direct injection.

But I am really writing because of your "fear" and my fear and because I am really tired of being afraid of my governments.

We stand up jet ski for the feeling of Freedom it provides.

Freedom means NOT "finding any information."

Freedom means only having a FEW laws, each of which is NOT confusing.

Hey!! Funny you’re in Wisconsin! I used to live there but now love in Florida. I know rod! My dad started and ran prairie motor sports in prairie du Chien. It’s owned by Eric now because my dad sold it back in 2008 but that’s too funny, small world. I remember now rod being pretty big into stand ups. Anyway I most likely won’t be riding in WI but mostly on lake Hartwell and in Florida around Daytona beach.

Maybe you should skip the flatwater freestyle ski's too then. I've knocked my body around a good bit with just a superjet.

Rickters do not have a HIN Number as far as like a Yamaha has. It does have a production ID Number, But there is not MSO that comes with the hulls.

Where would you even ride something like that with no Hull number to register it? This is where I get confused as to what people are doing.


Edit: just found an old thread in here finally. Sounds like Rickter, trinity, bob hulls are all not that easy to just register depending on the state because of the lack of a HIN. Interesting. I wonder if the Krash ready to run reaper has a HIN? If so I think that’d be a good bet if I went with a new ski. Decent price compared to building a custom budget Rickter even. So many decisions.

As said you need to get a state issued HIN number. It takes patience, phone calls and inquiries to find out what each states procedure is. I’ve only done this in two states and the state agency that handles it was different in each case and their procedures and requirements were totally different. I’m sure there are states that make it impossible, but you need to do some research on your specific state.

Thank you! This is what I was sorta gathering from responses. I don’t Georgia is all that bad and I can’t imagine Florida is either. Appreciate all the responses. Very very helpful.

Effortless to register am hull on ca just bring a few receipts from hardware store and say you built it yourself
