Light Weight Batteries <1lb?!

Other than the 4lb battery from Wally World are there any other light battiers out there? I have seen seen some for bikes but nothing that looks like it would be a direct replacement. This one http://www.ebattonline.com/ looks like it could work but it would be a pain to try to get it to charge from a jet ski charging system. Lossing 15 lbs is very signifigant and would be the equivelent to running a 1/2 tank vs a full tank.

The link for EBATT looks good. I bet it would work as long you don't overcharge or overdischarge the pack. If the battery has it's own electronic cutoff when the voltage hits the correct level then it should work with a stock charging system.

The problem with lithium batteries is you have to charge them to 4.2volts per cell. If you keep charging past 4.2volts it will kill the battery. If you discharge the pack to less than about 3volts per cell you will kill the battery.

Does anyone know how many amps using a 12v battery it takes to start a typical jetski? There is some really really light weight lithium polymer batteries that could be used to start a ski. The problem is the charging system.
I have some 5amp 3 cell lithium batteries that weigh very little. You could double them up for a 3cell 10amp pack which would give you a good bit of starting power.
You have to know that watts=voltsxamps

The key is knowing how many amps it takes to start a ski.

I fly high powered electric radio controlled airplanes so that's how I know a good bit about batteries.

I have played around with batteries like those (sub-c). Even used them to start/run an Acura Integra. They just do not offer much reserve capacity which means your ski better start up easily AND I would not run a total loss or bilges.

Those aren't sub C batteries.

How many amps is a stock SJ battery? I don't see anything on the battery.

Does anyone know how many amps it takes to start a SJ.

The ones I used were sub C.. pretty close in size to those.

Regular PWC battery is roughly
19 ah +/-
250 cca +/-

If their pack can truly do 125 ca then that should start most any ski w/o a problem. I would be surprised if a good condition starter/electrical system will draw more than 30-50 amps.

i was wondering when they would come out with those kinda batteries. Anyone have a lithium ion cordless drill, they have got lots of power and last along time driving in screws. ask any drywaller they can tell ya about the difference in these new batteries. To bad we couldn't just plug our dewalt batteries in and charge the other on shore while we use the other. lol.

**DING** now theres an idea.

that would be great for guys running total loss, plug in play batteries :purr:

The new drills are mostly using A123 type batteries which are LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate).

Lithium polymer is lighter weight and has a higher energy density but much less tolerant of charging /discharging issues.

I recieved a reply for additional information. Unfortunately I don't have the info needed to figure out a battery setup for a ski.

They need the specs/wiring diagram/amp loads/voltages etc for the electrical system.

I'm sure we can get a couple of pound setup going with no problem. It will just take someone with knowledge of the specs on the ski.

See ya-Scott

We need John @ JetSki Solutions.

Looks like all you need to do is take the small red wire off the starter solenoid on an SXR and connect that wire to the yellow wire on the e-batt and it should safely self charge.

I tried one of the 4lb SLA batteries back before I changed to total loss...Granted it only had 55cca and 4 amp/hours but it could crank my ski for about 5 seconds and then it was dead. Never once actually started my ski.

On a more optimistic note...If these really will crank the ski 10 times an hour for 10 hours like they claim, I could see it powering a ski for a full day easily. I would also imagine that you could run a dedicated one for your bilge since an extra 12oz. is pretty negligible. $130 a piece isn't chump change though...

Looks like you'd need an auto-shutoff circuit so that you didn't over discharge the battery. forgetting to turn off you bilge pump could destroy your brand new $130 battery in a flash.

that didnt say anything about starting jet skis, just motorcross bikes.
