Lightened Flywheel HOW MUCH off??

When they lighten the outer edge of the flywheels it cuts threw the balancing holes.

To be honest with you I don't think that anyone is rebalancing the flywheels after lightning them, even though they should.

An easy way to check balance is to use a lawn mower blade balancer.

Looks like this.

I agree 100% I have never noticed any balancing marks on any flywheels after machining I don’t believe the builders even balance them they only cut them down.

You would never be able to balance a flywheel with that static wheel balancer properly.

It requires a very expensive machine call a rotation balancer and the part has to be spun around at a high speed in order to obtain the balancing measurements.

Yes I agree this is why I don't think the engine builders do it.

I'm familiar with that type of balancer, but why wouldn't a static balancer work? I understand it's not as good, but it's better then not doing it at all.

Doug

Or even the type of static balancer that sits on a jig stand?

Rotational dynamic balancers are a must on internal engine components because it only takes less then an ounce of imbalance to equal about 2000 lbs. of force at higher rpm's.

I balance my impellers and flywheels with a modified version of a Du Bro model airplane prop balancer. The steel supports were replaced with non-magnetic SS.
Also,I have a special larger diameter hub with aluminum cones to center the piece being balanced. Model airplane motors spin well over twice the RPM any ski motor can. So far it's worked really well for low $$.

No more numb feet from a out of balance impellers.

Exactly what I'm saying. There is no reason why a static balancer setup will not work.

Where do you take the metal off the impeller for balancing?

First you mount the "flywheel" in this case, in the balancing fixture. Then you make a small ball from some plasticine modeling clay and stick it to the top. The heavy end settled to the bottom. Then you rotate the flywheel slowly and let it settle again. It takes a few tries, but with adding/subtracting/moving the clay (weight) the heavy spot will be located....on the bottom. Then carefully drilling the opposite end where the clay/marking spot was. I found that even New impellers and flywheels all needed some grinding or drilling. So much for stock stuff.

Sorry #.0, a little side tracked there...The weight is removed from inside the prop hub. For a crude static balancer it works really well. You can feel the difference.
