Lithium batteries... are they safe

Location

Just had the battery go in my XFS comp 1200

the lead acid battery I run is 6.2kg and bloody heavy

are lithium batteries safe? See a lot of people using

only thing is I don’t have TL so not sure if the ski charging system can damage them?
Thanks

Im pretty sure they are safe as long as you maintain a certain minimum voltage.
Just charge or replace if it gets too low, I don't think they would even crank a ski below like 11.5 volts so should be safe, maybe not completely fool proof though.

Just had a read online and says max charge voltage for a LiPo battery is 14.4 volts

the super jet manual says charge voltage is 14.3-15.3 volts

guess unless I want to go TL may as well just keep the lead acid battery to be safe

ive been using lithium in my ski for the past 4-5 years. i alway take the ski out when transporting the ski or when ski is in my garage. Basically i only have the battery in when im riding on the ski - some think its to much ocd. But it takes me 1 minute to take it out.

Here are two horror stories:

All the consumer stuff uses LI-FE cells, those are relatively safe LI-PO batteries are very dangerous by comparison.

I used a WPS for 5.5 seasons, no issues. Never took it out, only charged it once(winter in Wisconsin is COLD) when I left the bilge on...took 7 minutes to charge full.

Got a FirePower(WPS new name?) last year. No issues. Cranks better, 12.5lbs lighter, and practically zero maintenance. SXR with Zero Flywheel, Wet Pipe, TDR Box, and ADA head @175psi.

Crank slow in cold weather. If it’s 50 or 55 in garage I’ll heat the battery first with a hair dryer.... if it’s a cold morning at the water I’ll put it on floor of truck and heat with the hvac on heat and floor mode first... then iam good for the day..

They are safe as said above and most dirt bikes have come with them for a few years now. When it’s cold just bump it over a couple times to heat the battery, you don’t need to physically heat it. I’ve done this with my Husqvarna in freezing temps.

They are not lopo’s but been using them in R/C planes for over 10 years without a single issue either.

Same, been using them in RC for well over 10 years now. Like all batteries, they last if you know how to take care of them. I still use Lipos from 9 years ago in my RCs. Get over 20 minute runtime just like when they were new.

LIPOs got a lot safer as smart chargers became widely available. In the beginning everyone I know torched one with a nicd charger. They are still power kegs if mishandled. I have a bunch of large 3 cell packs, I may make an external box and see how well they work.

Shoria is now making them with 5 year warranty. Sub $200 price and made very well. The are all safe but many brands don’t last long at all

If a li fe batt makes it 5 years I’ll be beyond impressed. If not it’s under warranty
