Looking at SJ on CL, looking for opinions on this deal.

We had that ski shipped from Kansas to ohio for like $250... Shipping is so cheap and easy. Definitely worth looking into. Ive personally ridden the ski and its beast. A lot of ski for what hes asking.
I'm interested, what year is that ski? Did you build it?

Ok, thanks for the help everyone. I have a deal in place to get the 2013 posted above for $5700. The guy who owns it has 4 superjets so this one isn't ridden too often. It has very low hours and is basically like new. It's maybe a bit high on the price but there's nothing else nice 2008 or newer anywhere close to here so I'm going to go for it.

Yah. Maybe a little high on the price. But should be a nice, reliable, powerful (170 psi... make sure you verify this in person) ski. Perfect for a newbie like yourself.
You may end up with add-ons down the road as you get comfortable with this. But not essential... this ski should crank as is for years.
Enjoy!

The 2008 hull is a lot more than a 96 hull with sponsons, it is completely different, the set back pump, the transom shape, the strakes are different.

I still ride a 2003 and love it, you should try both if possible. Highly built older skis are a lot of fun. However stock vs stock, the 08 was superior out of the box.

Everyone posting here knows more than me. But in my experience, that could be a great ski and the price would be a great Winter price in California. The turf is not stock. It was likely done by Blowsion in Sherwood (South of Portland). They probably know the history of the ski - you may want to call John up there, but I would talk with the ski's owner first. The ski's owner's garage is super clean which indicates that he is fastidious about his stuff which likely includes his skis. I would like to know how he bumped up the compression from stock 150 psi to 170 and who did it. He is running non-ethanol premium and the ski is freshwater only, so again he is saying all the right things which means he knows all the right things. And he has not compromised the reliability of the ski by over-modding it (as opposed to some kid who started ripping out stock parts and started throwing aftermarket parts in a confused hack job manner). I wonder if all the work was done by Blowsion before he bought it, so you might want to ask. Blow$ion is expensive. But I bet that it is good work. An 8 hour drive is nothing between you and Spokane. So I say jump on it.

For comparison a similarly pristine 25-year old square nose down here would go for $2500. So, they keep their value if you don't over-mod them.

P.S. I personally like bright skis. So, black would not be my preference. Make sure that you wear a bright life vest so that you aren't clobbered by an inattentive wake boat driver...

I talked to the seller for a while, really nice guy, seems around 50 something years old. He's obviously pretty wealthy, the ski is at his cabin. I'm not worried about the condition of the ski at all. I won't get an opportunity to ride both an older hull and a newer one. I'm going off of the idea that the newer ones hook up better in the corners at the expense of being less playful. I think I would enjoy the better hookup more.

bernard don't overthink it. Buy it and ride it. Don't over mod it. Buy it and ride it. Then when you can ride it well, demo other people's aftermarket skis. And buy or build an aftermarket ski which will satisfy your high performance goals.

PS. I am 64 and I would rather buy a ski from a 50 year old than a 20 year old. You can learn allot during those 30 years...

PPS. That ski will be "playful."

I'll probably port it and pipe it before the spring. I modify EVERYTHING and I've built some cool stuff too! Currently I have a 2001 911 Turbo with 700hp on its second engine and a LTR450 ATV with a 550 stroker motor making 70hp on race gas. I've owned a bunch of modified vehicles and bikes in the past, I love tinkering with stuff.

Cool! Buy it and ride it. Then you might want to do what BK is doing (and when I have the money what I also want to do) - build a Rickter Edge.

But, in my personal opinion, which is based on my limited experience, that SJ ski is designed by brilliant and experienced engineers who have created a balance of hull performance matched to the pump to the engine power to to the hull's weight. Sure you can change some aspect, but until you change it all, it will still be what it is now.

And you change it all by moving to a different hull. @Lumberjack

Why don't you just put that 911's 700hp turbo in a Datsun?

Buy it and ride it and don't compromise it. Then sell it and build an AM ski. But again, I am the least knowledgeable poster in this thread.

I'm going to have some fun tinkering, good or bad. The Porsche has unreal handling and brakes to go along with its power.

Hey, gent's, just came across thread. I'm the old wealthy guy with the 13 SJ for sale...haha!!! thanks for kind words
So just to set record straight, the comp number is what I pulled off my snap on gauge, maybe closer to 165psi, Maybe it's off. I crank till needle tops out at open throttle cold. It is an overall nice reliable ski..
And...I'm not 50 but close at 47 not very wealthy but rich in life here in Montana!!
Cheers

Well, Bernard came all the way up to almost the Canadian border to pick up the 13 SJ. What a great guy to make that haul in winter, it was a pleasure meeting him. I think I may have been overly excited to see a Superjet go to fresh new blood in the culture of stand up water scooter's!! I'm sure he will certainly enjoy the ski and welcome the progression and passion of our sport!!

Cheers!

Great to meet you today, hopefully we can get together and ride at the beach or something someday. Funny story, I accidentally missed the exit I was going to get gas at. It was a really bad spot to do that as the highway splits and there is no way to turn around for a long time and it is bruttaly up hill driving. I ran my truck out and stopped. I'm glad you had the ski topped off. I tipped it over and dumped the premix into my bucket and then into the gas can I had (empty can at that point). I was able to make it 40 miles on premix!
