Other Looking for a good Tach for tuning...

Ive been dealing with carb tuning for two seasons now and dont feel like Im getting my ski tuned in perfectly. For the next season I plan on doing it correctly and buying a good tach to dial it in. I was going to go with the pet 2100 but found another option and was wondering if anyone has any input, possibly something else better or easier to use. The cornwell dealer that comes to my shop suggested theirs and it looks awesome and I could actually use it for other things here at work. Its a TA-500 smart tach. Heres a link to one http://www.vehicleservicepros.com/article/10360999/general-technologies-ta500-smartach-tool-review

Only issue I see is that it has a 3x per second refresh rate, It does show live rpm as well as peak high and low rpm on the same screen though so the refresh rate might not be as critical

The knock offs are like $15, that is for sure. The link I sent is a real one. They are good for 1 cylinder to 8. None specific to jetski's other than the one I showed because it is waterproof. (potting compound).

I had a tiny tach but gave it away, I've was told they don't refresh fast enough to properly tune. I don't mind spending the money if a better product is needed. Just tired of taking the ski out and having carb issues and want it done right.

1-tiny tachs do update too slow for proper carb tuning.

2-if you are having "issues", a tach likely wont help. If you are close a tach will help to get it perfect, but more severe or noticeable issues indicate a more severe issue somewhere.

I've had a few odd things pop up this season but have everything narrowed down to tuning now. It runs smooth and has decent power now after playing with N/S, jetting and pop off. I'm just tired of trying to tune in the carbs by "feel" and want to do it properly.

your motor will like the max rpm tune. Check the tech section for Watcon's write up "carb tuning for rookies" he spells it out very clearly and you are correct you need a proper tach that one you are looking at looks nice.

Thanks Mark, You know how long I've been going around in circles with tuning. I'll get it close and then have a random issue that I try to tune out and wind up starting over with tuning. I really want to get it dialed in and leave it alone. I plan on pulling the motor apart this winter and inspecting/resealing since its been three years or so since I rebuilt it. The smart tach I was looking at would be nice to have at work since its so useful for daig in many situations. I'll prob go that route, We could use a good tach to pass around the stl crew anyway.

Looks like that tach you're looking at needs to have that antannae looking thing touching the plug wire or at least close to it. Is that correct? May be a little hard to use on any jet ski at WOT let alone a stand up...

I have a hardline tach. It's mounted to my dash. It has a resettable max RPM reading that works just fine as long as you keep the pump loaded. I would probably run it up my pole but I'm not sure if it takes a special wire.

Yes, the end of the lead needs to be on the plug wire. I figure a piece of tape to keep it in place will be fine. I'll be tuning with the ski strapped down to the trailer with the exit nozzle high in the water, seems to work well. keeps the pump loaded but dosent try and run off the trailer.

You wrap the wire and Velcro the tach to the dash or hood. You really want to watch it, not just look for peak Rpms. What it's doing is more important than the reading itself in some cases.

The PET2100x is what we use. It updates almost instantaneously. The PET2500 is awesome, but not worth double the amount. JMO.

Bumping an old thread.

So my tiny tach only works for a few seconds with the Enhancer and I doubt it will work at all with my Epic. Anyone using a sub 100$ tach that works with your TL or Epic?

The tiny tach worked great and had a fast enough refresh rate... with the stock cdi..
