Looking for information

Hello everyone. I just joined the Forum after buying a 95 or 96 Wet jet Duo 300. It seems to be in really great shape and I want to try to start it but I want to make sure that I'm doing everything correctly. The fuel gauge shows empty and there's already oil in the oil tank. I haven't found a place to hook up a hose yet. The engine looks practically new but I could use any information or tips on what to check before I try firing it for the first time.

Take spark plugs out and verify that you can rotate engine coupler by hand. Maybe add a very small amount of oil to each cylinder and rotate again. Fresh gas. Pray the 30 year old crank seals don’t cause the engine to run away (be ready to grab full throttle and hold down stop button if engine revs uncontrollably. You could also start with flame arrestor off so you can block top of carb if it runs away.)!

Personally I wouldn't even put fuel in the tank until I at least looked inside the tank, if you want to start it to check the engine out pull the flame arrestor off and pour a small amount of premix down the carb throat, at this point if the compression is good and it has spark it should fire up. What Kohldanialzimm posted is good advice, follow it.

The issue with just putting gas in it and hoping for the best is this, gasoline degrades over time and turns to varnish and tar which gums up fuel petcocks and carbs and it sticks to the bottom of the tank, gasoline is a solvent so when you put fresh gas in the tank it starts to dissolve anything stuck to the bottom of the tank, once it breaks loose it heads straight for the carb.

Your best bet is to do a full inspection of the fuel system before ever putting gas back in the fuel tank , I know it seems like a lot of work but trust me it will save you many headaches in the long run.

I got it started. I took the spark plugs out and looked into the cylinders with a camera scope. Minimal amount of rust so I filled them with 3 in 1 oil and let it sit. I tried to look into the gas tank bit there was a lip in the fill tube preventing me from getting the camera all the way into the tank. Removed the coupler cover by hand and lightly rotated the crank. No hang ups or bad noises. Compression seemed good so I put it back together with a new battery and started it with a little fuel in the carb. I shut the line off going to the tank. Does anyone know where I can get a service manual? I'm wanting to pull the oil tank and fuel tank to clean them. Also the seat is pushing the plastic tray against the exhaust. Is there a way to adjust it so it sits higher?

Regrettably I left the dealership right before the Mastercraft skis arrived, I think over the years I worked on maybe one of those skis, I remember something about the fuel tanks not coming out of the skis so any tank cleaning will probably have to be done with the tank still in the ski . I don't have enough experience with these to help further than that.

I would just go ride it for a while and stay close to shore. You dont know anyways till its under load.

The only things you can really do before you ride it is new gas and a leakdown test.

Show me a picture of the tank and pickups so I can see what you are working with, one thing I do is dump Castrol superclean or LA awesome cleaner full strength into the fuel tank, it will take a few days but it will dissolve anything left in the fuel tank, it also helps to slosh it around a bit so if nothing else raise and lower the trailer tongue a bit to agitate the cleaner in the tank, depending on how much access you have you can make a mop out of a shop rag and a wooden dowel, nail or staple the shop rag onto the dowel and use that to scrub out the tank with, after that you can put a garden hose in the tank and float out pretty much everything that is left, get all the water out and refill with gasoline.

I haven't had time to get to the tank yet. Im going to try tomorrow. It looks empty from the outside but also smells like gas

Yeah that first pic is the oil tank and I can't tell what kind of access you have through the filler neck or what kind of pickups it has from those pics.
