Looking for recommendations: (Relatively) cheap not-quite flatwater freestyle

yea, but when you didnt qualify all those years , your crank didnt get much use or when you were swimming it didnt get abused either. your crank must be the only one on the planet that lasted that long.

duh, your crank lasted so long cause you never used it. fell down/didnt qualify/were swimming instead of riding

Funny guy.......... I used it plenty. 2006 2nd in Nov Stock and Limited(On A Stock SXR) in Reg 7. It got plenty of hard use. But when you take care of your chit it can last. Lets get back on topic here.

Guess you have never ridden a properly tuned Superstock level SXR then. I have ridden several that made me say "Damn, I wish I had this in my SJ". They make plenty of power if you know who to contact for the build.

sorry, but you got it started. never assume or guess. all the best advice was already given. the only way to take care of an sxr crank is to keep the boat at half throttle.

thats another thing i like about yamaha stuff, theres companies like DASA, XScream, True Performance, JetManiac/Blue , plus the mix and match yamaha stuff you can come up with for a 760 engine. i just can't see you sitting back and saying "man, i should have stuck with my sxr engine" those boats just successfully failed at freestyle. (<opinion guys, chill). another option, get an EME hull, throw your kawi in it and a 145. then get the adapter plates and run a yamaha motor later kinda like what Swanny did.

Sell both kawis and put some money towards a good, built rn or buy you parts and a hull and throw them together. You are probably better off with the sj right now though.

Are adapter plates a EME specific thing or is that something that could feasibly be done with other aftermarket hulls? On the topic of aftermarket hulls, while the selection is limited by a Kawi driveline is there one that'd be better suited for a small / light rider or better suited for mildly choppy lake usage?

As far as the engine goes, I don't have any attachment to the SXR engine. I do have an SXR engine already though, along with all of the other parts. I don't plan to go crazy on engine modifications on this ski, since I'm operating under the assumption that in a couple of years I may be able to afford something completely different. Whether it's a modded SJ, an aftermarket hull with my SXR parts inside, or something completely different, I'm just trying to put together a ski that'll last me through a few summers of learning with a little lee way in terms of upgrades "just in case"... using what I currently have available as best as is possible (both hardware and cash).

To state it differently, I'd love a Super Jet but I'm worried that in the short term (meaning this year) I'll end up with a less capable ski than I'd have if I kept the SXR parts in an aftermarket hull. I still need to research SC's rules on titling skis, since that might factor in. There's also the fact that I'm not certain I'll have the time or means to build a ski myself (even with help), so that could factor into the cost of going the aftermarket hull route. Everything I've read so far says that "get an SJ" would be a better long-term investment, but that has to be balanced by the question of "would an aftermarket hull with SXR internals and a couple of modifications be all that you'd need for a few years while costing about the same amount and being (almost) immediately available?"

Few summers of learning = superjet. Period. Way more nimble and capable of ANY sxr, ever.

Fair enough. It'd be easier from a paperwork standpoint, easier to maintain, and there's plenty of room for improvement before switching hulls. I'm probably completely underestimating the hull + build cost versus the cost of a SJ, too... what's the going price on 2008+ SJ? I see one in the skis for sale section (conveniently located in SC) but I don't know if that's typical. Is it worth it to hold out for the "last" hull versus getting a previous model hull cheaper?

A 96-07 would be fine really. Not too many differences. You can find some unmolested skis for good prices (varies state to state). You don't want to spend THAT much only to upgrade hulls later.
