Other Looking into buying stand up ski...

So I have been riding "couches" for years. Sold my GP760 last year, went up to GP1300. Love it! Not selling it, but would like to add a stand up to the fleet. A bit nervous attempting to learn so late in the game (I'm 35 lol) but I like to learn new stuff. Don't want to spend alot of cash on one in case I don't like it. Where should I start? I love Yamaha stuff, but not brand loyal. I like Kawi too. Being that I know nothing about stand ups, I don't wanna get steered in the wrong direction though.

Any help is greatly appreaciated.

;-)

If you're serious about getting into it, look for a square nose yamaha superjet (1990-1995). These can be found from $1000-$2500. These are cheaper, common, and easy to upgrade. Any standup is better than no standup when your learning, so dont necessarily shy away from a kawasaki 750. I'd stay away from kawi 550's and 650's, not that there's anything wrong with them, but the newer ski's are leagues better, and dont cost much more. Age is no problem, my dad started a few years ago in his late 40's.

well since your a couch rider you probable like to go fast and then do a circle get a Kawasaki sxr its the couch of stand ups

The kawasaki sxr 800 and yamaha round nose superjet are also to be considered, but are a little harder to find and are generally $3000 (if your lucky) and more . Its all about what you're willing to spend. Newer ski's are almost always better.

I'm only a couch rider because I've never really looked into stand ups. No need to presume what i like though. Couches are good for going fast and playing around with donuts and island hopping. I am actually looking at playing in the waves a bit more, and trying not to crack my skull open...but I'm a sport bike rider since I was 19, and I basically view stand ups as the dirt bikes of the water, and mine is like the sport bike of the water. Correct? Always wanted to learn how to jump and do flips and barrel rolls and such.

I don't mind doing work to an older one, would like to stay fairly inexpensive as a first time learner ski, then graduate to nicer, newer one once i get the hang of it and/or like it.

I would get a rn superjet 1996 and up if you plan on doing barrel rolls/freestyle if you wanna go fast like ricky bobby then get a sxr 800 (2003 and up i believe) they are much heavier and not so much freestyle great carvers at high speed the rn superjets not so much...You already got the sitdown to go fast so I would try out a rn superjet. I would buy a nicer one now if you got the money id say $4000 would get you a very solid standup and I almost gaurentee you will like them! If not turn around and get your $4000 back, I wouldnt even mess with the cheap stuff if you have the cash. Just my .02

I def agree with NorCalSJ.....stay away from the older stuff if you have cash. If you get all your gear together, and you go to the lake, and have to wrench, thats a total bummer, and a WASTE of a day.

True. Well, being that I only spent $3600 for my like new 04 GP1300 with trailer and a bunch of goodies, I was hoping to not spend too much on a stand up for just playing around. I don't have cash for it right now, but I will during the off season. Not really wanting to spend $3500+ for one. Don't need a trailer either. But something decent, and that is or can be made reliable easily is what I am after. Just going to take my time, wait for Xmas to come and people need $$$ to buy their kids presents...and that's when I find the best deals. LOL

Thanks. I will keep my eyes open for a 96+ SJ then. Cool deal!! Any tell tale signs of bad news I need to look for when shopping?

96+ superjet is the only way to go. I started on a couch in 1994, then a seadoo HX (small couch) then a kawai 550 stand up and now have two 96+ superjets.

Other than a good overall visual inspection, look at the prop for chips, and more importantly CHECK COMPRESSION.

Dude, there's so many Florida riders to go hook up with and test ride their skis its not even funny. I bet pretty much every beach in Florida, there's a few standup riders within 10 miles. Go ride them and see what you like

Yeah I know, but I don't feel comfortable asking to ride other peoples stuff. Comes from lots of years of riding motorcycles and such. Hoping to make some new friends though, and test some out for sure!
