Just sold my seapoo hx. Was actually a good ski had no issues. But ready to get into a B1. I'm not terribly familiar with yamaha skis. I know to check compression, etc. I hear to look closely at the transom for cracks. Any tips you guys can give me so I don't end up with a pos? Goal with ski is strictly rec riding and occasional surf. Been riding/racing motox for 18 years, so fully able to turn a wrench, etc. thanks!!!
A short list:
Cracks around the gunwales form hitting docks
Transom cracks as mentioned, keap an eye on the rear corners too as I have seen them break off completely
Play in drive shaft (reach into the pump tunnel and roll the drive shaft back and forth, there shouldnt be any play, if there is, its possibly on its last legs)
Pump bearings (listen to the pump when its running, if its rattling like a beast, could need bearings)
Cracks around the hood lips (they only get bigger)
Damage the to seat where it hooks to the sides of the hood and to the hull by the battery box
Compression should be 150/150 a hole in a good motor, but at least even. Above 145 when I am buying to feel good about it.
Play in the steering system, tightness in the cable as max throw could mean you need a new one, any sign of rust or splitting in the red sheath could be trouble too
I find these as the basics I check when I go out to look at a B1. You will find many of them sun faded, but they can be buffed to a nice shine with some effort! Just my 2 cents.
