looking to buy my first new superjet.

I am looking at buying a new 2014 superjet. What do you guys that have them think of them. pros/cons? I'm just starting out so I dont have a lot of experience on stand ups. any input would be great thanks

I have one. wasn't even close to worth the money. Wish i would have saved for after market... I do my best to talk everyone out of making the same mistake as me. Here is my advice

Options:
1) Buy a used SJ in the 2K dollar range and start saving every penny to go AM. I like new stuff so I'm saving for a new AM setup. but that is pricey and will probably take me years to afford. not sure what your finances are like.
2) Buy a used Am setup for around the same price as a new SJ. It may be hard to find one around 9 or 10K but they are out there. just be patient.
3) if you absolutely you HAVE to have a new SJ for whatever reason (financing, you just prefer new stuff, you like the way they ride) then look around and try to find a dealer who still has a 2013 they weren't able to offload. a dealer here had one for sale a month ago for 7K instead of the original 8200. your area may have one lingering around too. The only difference is the decals, and I think the orange looks better anyway.

If you do go the route of the new SJ here are some things to be prepared for. taxes and fees are $1000. I bought mine for 8000 but walked out spending a few dollars under 9K. I think the only way around some of this cost is if you buy out of state, they wont charge you the state sales tax???? not positive on that though. I just think I read that somewhere. can anyone else verify/debunk that? Also, many (myself included) have mentioned a weird chine walk these have on glassy water. you may want to ride one of these if you haven't yet. IMO they are still the best handling SJ's and are my favorite to ride. The dealer will definitely try to sell you gap insurance. I personally don't like it, and didn't get it. However, if you are one who likes it, tell the dealer no at first. They WILL drop the price on it to try and entice you. say no again. they WILL drop the price on you AGAIN. Then agree (if you really think you need it). Lastly, plan on your ski depreciating extremely fast. these hold their value once they are 10 years old, but i can promise you once you pull it off the lot you wont find anyone who will buy it off of you for less than 6K. I tried.

good advice thanks man. I am pretty sure you pay out of state tax but once you are back in your state you pay the difference in your state. I will look for a 2013 and see what else is out there. I do perfer new stuff to old just for the problem sake or things. I know I beat it and not jo blow down the street. I am going to do some thinking on this. thanks for you input.

I guess it would have been beneficial for me to buy out of state because in Colorado we don't title skis. At no point would I be asked how much I paid or where did I buy it. Unfortunately I bought it here lol.

I'd suggest buying new if you can swing it. In the long run you'll be happy. Your new. Your not going out looking to back flip it or roll it. Just rec ride, turn, slash whatever, chase boats an jump wake to wake. I got a 2013 last year an love it. I started going hard on it an it started to crack from landing on the side coming up short on barrel rolls. So I simply don't dog the ski anymore in that manor.

The up side is if you do progress, ride alotttt an want to freestyle and pull big tricks pick up a Am hull down the road then you have all nice new-ish stuff to swap in! And I'd never suggest going straight to Am ski. Every new person I let on my Rickter just can't get the feel or hang of it, due to short pole, riser bars, all that personalized stuff. They hate it. You will too. I'm 98% sure from experience lol.

I went from a group k hammer kaw 650 sx to a 14 super jet. I like how smooth the sj is and it's nice not to have an old ski. I'm tired of stuff going wrong. Broken bolts bad electrical etc. trust me I upgraded everything and ended up with a great 650 but it was still old. I spent the weekend riding and have added bars and a worx intake great with a stubby cone. I really like it and the boat handles really well. It's hard to spin and I have read a lot about guys converting back to pre 07 steering to make the boat more of a freestyle ski.

I may do this mod and add a factory pipe for more jam. I'm 40 and doubt I will be doing any back flips regardless of what I ride but it's a fun boat and a lot easier on my body then my x2 which is still one of my fav's to ride.

Good luck with your choice I'm sure you will be happy with whatever you decide.

Buy a Superjet

Buy a used Superjet for 2-3k. Even if the engine blows up the first day you can get it rebuilt back to better then new for less then 1k. You will probably need a prop 100-250$, maybe new pump bearings 40$, carb rebuild 40-80$, maybe some new turf 60$. You are also going to want to get an exhaust pipe for it if it doesn't come with an a/m one. So that is 300-800$ depending on what you want.

So now you have a reliable Super jet with a new engine for less then 4k$. It also has more power and a better prop then the 2013/14 SJ.

I was in the same boat literally last year. I had the cash in hand and was going to go for a new 2013 SJ. I found a 2008 for $5,500.00 still a lot but I was able to keep $3,500.00 in my pocket for the same ski after taxes and fees (granted it was not brand new but in the end it made no difference). As the 08 thru 2014 are identical I had to ask myself is new worth $3,500.00 more. Answer for me no... Man am I glad I went the path I did. It left me the extra cash to start with basic add on's and a ton of fuel plus material to fab up a hitch hauler. I agree look for a used ski most will have some after-market parts and a few will have all the good stuff Factory B pipe gridled head, bilge set up, bars, grips and steering system up-grades footholds... ect... ect... These are all thing that will be on the wish list if you get gut hooked by riding as most on this site are. Save the cash and buy a used ski. SJ parts are plentiful and learning to work on your ride is a must.

Buy something a couple years old that is well loved. You will save so much cash that way...you will get tired of stock quick so use the saved cash on AM mods. '08 to current is all the same stuff. I would even suggest finding some folks near you with varying degrees of SJ-ness and see what appeals to you.

I have a SN, have ridden a few round nose hulls and still prefer my SN over the new stuff.

leaning toward a used ski now. How far back do I go? I found a stock 94 sj for 1900. clean ski only has intake grate and ride plate. Is that to old? should I be more in the 2000's ?

There's nothing wrong with a 94 if its clean. It would be an awesome first ski :) Then when you upgrade, its cheap enough that you could justify keeping it as a beater for friends to learn on. If you were my brother That is the route i would suggest going. If you can get the buyer to let you take it for a spin before you buy it that would be ideal. Just my two cents. Honestly if you like the way the post 08 SJ's ride though, you could probably find a used one around 6K, which IMO wouldn't be a bad price to pay for one that is pretty much brand new.

Basic Super Jet differences:
1990 thru 1993 650cc single carb 6m6 case and cylinders. Square Nose Top Deck.
1994 & 1995 701cc single carb 61x case & 61x cylinders. Square Nose Top Deck.
1996 thru 2007 701cc duel carb 62t case & 61x cylinders. Round Nose Top Deck. New style hand pole.
2008 thru 2014 701cc duel carb 62t case & 61x cylinders. Round Nose Top Deck. New bottom hull (all previous models have the same bottom hull) pump is set back 50mm & the hand pole is from the 1994-1995 FX-1 that is two inches shorter than the 1996 thru 2007 pole.

Four models in 24 years good ROI for Yamaha.

IMO they are all fun as hell to ride.

I owned square an 2013, spent time on a friends 2003 also. The round nose no matter what feels a lot better. Same bottom deck it still feels lighter, faster reacting, rides smoother. Looks 100000000x better. You can get nice used 96-07 Rn with mods under $4,000.
