low compression

Hi,

I have compression tested my SXR and it is down to 120 PSI in both cylinders. It used to be 150 PSI when i got it. Its an 06 model.

I have not really dealt with 2 strokes more often 4 strokes. Is it more likely to be the head gasket and i need to rebuild the top end or is it more likely to be the piston rings ?

I would borrow a gauge and get a secondary reading before dinging into the engine. And yes, worn pistons or old rings could cause low comp. too. Good luck.

I have tried it with two separate gauges and both read 120 so the reading is good.

I am just trying to work out if i need to replace just the head gasket or is it more likely the rings so was seeing who has experience with SXRs.

I thought it was weird they both low but reading the same PSI which seems to be equal wear on something.

Lift the head and go search the problem...nobody can tell you what's wrong! Good luck

You have to take the head off for the gasket anyway, at which time you can inspect the cylinder.

That SXR is 10 years old. I would definitely replace the old top end with a fresh one for sure.

Edit: maybe new rings and a hone would be a good start

Very unlikely that it's the head gasket. Like mentioned before, only way to really inspect is to pull the head...
