MAG pumps and saltwater - Solas SS vs Skat trak

Imm having a hard time deciding which one to go for..

144mm SS Solas mag vs
144mm SkatTrak setback

I almost only ride saltwater, with the occasionally freshwater ride.

How many seasons can I expect the aluminum housing on the skat trak to hold up in salt, if washed down after use? How often do you see the housing crack on a 144mm?

The SS Solas wouldn't have that issue, but they don't offer setback???

Any inputs are welcome!!

Thanks for your input - but gets me absolutely no closer to any experience with how well the skat trak endures the saltwater!

Haha -

So your saying that I shouldn't think too much about submerging the aluminum housing with a SS stator core in saltwater on a regular basis ? ;)

It's just - I live in Denmark, and imm kinda far away if I need to send it for repairs at skat trak.. I would just appreciate at least a few seasons on it before repairs were needed!

It's just SS would never need to be repaired, as it's one unit, and not two different metals pushed into each other..

I had the housing crack on my Skat in the first season, it was a tolerance issue though and not related to corrosion. It's been 3 seasons since I had it repaired and it is holding up perfectly fine.

Setback will make about zero difference for you. The weight difference will mean nothing since you ride almost all surf. Solas will never have issues because of salt and is way cheaper. No brainer.

Skats are fine in salt water if you do the proper post riding cleaning. If you clean the engine after salt water riding, how much harder is it to do the same to the pump? Set backs do help with hook up, but most wouldn't even notice it. For the money, the Solas is da@mn hard to beat, IMO.

My buddy has had his skat pump a season I think. Had two big cracks in the aluminum on opposite sides of the stator, running the whole length of it. I think the salt was the only thing holding it together... He got another Skat though, as Skat says their new technique doesn't have this problem anymore...

I have skats on all my boats. 5 years on 148 which was bought used & no issues, several 144's 10 years plus new and used, all saltwater all summer long. I do rinse the whole boat when done. If you can afford a Skat buy it, if not buy the solas and get it from someone that will set it up right as they do have issues.

I ride 100% salt water. A few years back my business was doing well so I was fortunate enough to be able to ride a lot, averaging 3 times a week. I had heard how well the Skat Trak Mag pumps work in the surf so I picked one up. At that time the Solas Mag was not yet available. I loved the Mag pump, my ski would hook up through the white water of a wave just like I was riding in glass. Unfortunately, after only about 6 months the bearings started to sing so I sent it back to Glen at Skat Trak to inspect and rebuild it. The bill was $500! Oh well no ever said this sport was cheap and I got my amazing pump back. Another 6 months go by and the bearings are starting to sing again. I was frustrated because I had just spent $500 not to long ago. I pulled the pump to send it back to Glen again and discovered not only were the bearings going bad but that the Aluminum pump housing had completely split from the SS Stator section due to electrolysis. The repair bill this time was over $700! $1200 in repairs in less than a year was too rich for my pocket book, so I decided that even though I loved the pumps performance, it just didn't hold up well enough in Salt water use to be worthwhile. I switched back to my OEM Yamaha pump and have never had a pump problem since. That was over two years ago. I'm not sure if I had a defective Mag pump, or if Glen was just gouging me or a little of both but it left a really bad taste in my mouth concerning Skat Trak. I would love to run another Mag pump in my ski again, however this time I will go with the Solas. A new Solas is less than what I paid on just one of my two repair bills from Skat Trak. Plus since the Solas is all SS it cannot get any electrolysis damage. I've heard about the Solas having bearing problems but my Skat did too and at least with the Solas the causes have been identified and corrected. When it comes to salt water riding, going with the Solas is a no Brainer

I appreciate all the inputs.. It seems like for salt most of you are pointing me towards the SOLAS pump.. But theres still many different stories! I suppose its "take a chance" for whatever you decide. It can go wrong with the SOLAS as well as the SKAT pump.. Its just weird that something supposedly so simple, can cause so many problems :(

As stated earlier -->
if you want something to last forever, never use it. just beat it until it drops, then replace it. thats what i do.

Good point Chris, but the housing is SS and the OP was worried about housing cracking? If he maintains pump like the rest of the ski he should be fine with any of the options available

The housing on a MAXX pump is aluminum.
