Making of the SNX Hull

I'm jealous of that 3D printer. Very cool!

It's pretty sweet being able to design something and print it on the spot. There's a bit of a learning curve, especially printing larger items, but it's not too bad. I wish I bought it 6 months ago. Plugs that would have taken days and weeks to hand shape can be printed in a few hours and far more accurately. I just need a mini CNC mill to go with it.

No progress on the hull. Spending a lot of time working on the new pole. Designed molds to make the steering cable holders rather than machine them. Instead of a traditional layup, chopped carbon is stuffed into the mold, then an acrylic cover is placed over it, vacuum pulled, and then resin is injected into the mold.

Had to design jigs to make the stainless steel "clip" piece and to drill the through holes. Press in expansion inserts are used for the threads.

A lot going on with the adjustable poles. Prototype is 99% finished. I'll post more about them in the next few weeks as I finish up the last odds and ends. For now, here are a few pictures of the pieces right after clear coat.

Also, hardware on the poles will be all titanium and there are custom bushing mounts made from 316 stainless so pinch bolts can be run extra tight without damaging or abrading the laminate. (Single bolt will work as well)

Beautiful work man

Finally caught up on orders and can spend some time finishing the hull. Giving myself 1 month to have it on the water.

All of the major reinforcing and changes are done. New rails are done (haven't bonded them to the hull yet). Mainly cosmetic/finishing work left. And a lot of it.

And because this thread is pretty much worthless without some pictures of fancy visual carbon work...

Zolatone. I've breathed in some pretty nasty fumes over the years, but this stuff takes the cake. I was coughing my lungs out even with vents going and a respirator on.
