making sponsons?

Im doing a bunch of glasswork on my sx, and I have some 3/4 inch foam I was thinking of making sponsons with and glassing over them. I could cut the rough shape, glue them on the sides then shape them further by sanding and finally glass over them and smooth and paint. Is there a science to these? I rode an octane once and it felt 4 feet wide, I was thinking the wider and bigger the better but I could be wrong?
