Meniscus Tear

This past weekend I decided to ride the skis instead of taking out the boat. I warm up the ski, hop on, jump two boat wakes, and decide to do a nose stab. I prejump, braaaap, nose in, under water, and finally hang off the back into a tail stand. As I'm hanging off the back I feel an enormouse amount of pain in my left leg. I go to the shore and I had to be carried up to the chair. I iced my leg on and off for about 4 hours. Still no better. Every time I stood up I wanted to pass out from pain. Everyone loaded up my stuff, they carried me to the truck, and my buddy drove me home. Later on I went to the hospital... no broken bones. I scheduled an appointment with the Orthopedic doctor who ended up draining 1/2 cup of fluid from my knee and scheduling me for an MRI. Results came in last night..... I have a torn meniscus!:rocketwhore::rocketwhore::17::shooter3::banghead::banghead: Doc says if I don't have it fixed, I could have severe arthritis later on in life. If they can repair the tear, it's a minimum of 1 month of crutches. If they cut out the bad piece, I could recover quicker but then I would be more susceptible to arthritis because a portion of my meniscus is missing.

I'm pretty damn bummed to say the least. My riding season is over. I think I've only been on the skis maybe 4 - 5 times this whole season. Anyone have any uplifting thoughts? Anyone want to buy a kick ass ski with 5 hours on it?

Ouch! Sorry to hear that man. That really sucks. Since your riding season is over anyway, recovering a little quicker really shouldn't be a major concern if that is riskier for your health down the line. Hopefully they can repair it right. If it takes a little longer for you to be up and about, but it's healthier for the future....that sounds like the best move. Good luck with the procedure and your recovery.
And as far as an uplifting thought....one word. Elevator!! LOL!
Good luck dude. Wish ya the best.

Repair the Tear???

my first surgery was in 1982, had to have same knee scoped in 97. Both were torn minuscus. Unless something has changed, once it is torn it is torn, maybe they have something new that glues it back together, it wont fuse together like a bone will. The surgery is not bad (arthoroscope), you will be up walking within a day or so, then lots of PT. You could be back on the ski in about 4-6 weeks, but you would have to take it easy for a while.

Yeah, he said he won't know until he gets in there. They can be stitched back together sometimes, while other times they are just cut out.

What a pain....

I'd hope that medicinal technology has improved in the past 26 years...

11 years since the last operation.

But honestly, every once in a while knee will start to act up, all I have to do is get some exercise to build up the muscles around the knee and the problems usually go away.

I agree. It's not that bad. Just takes a little while to recover. I've had 2 scopes on my right knee (Torn Minuscus, partial ACL) and one on my left (full blow ACL replacement and Grade 3 tear of the MCL). In all 3 surgeries, I was back to at least 90% within 3 months.

Get the scope done and DO WHAT THE DOC SAYS and you'll be good to go.

Roger. It's just a bad time with work right now. I'm kicking myself for it. Oh well, it is what it is...

There is a good chance that it may have already been partially torn and you did not know it, that just caused it to let go. My 2nd surgery was middle of the summer. Kinda sucked, but oh well.

It's funny you mentioned this. I was thinking last night that I've had the same knee lock up/pop on maybe 3 - 5 occasions over the years and thought absolutely nothing of it. It was slightly painful when it happened each time as well. Every time that those episodes happened, I wasn't doing a damn thing either. I could have been sitting in the chair or walking normal.

It's possible the jetski just did it in.

that sucks-- i broke my leg earlier this year was out of work for about 6 weeks- after surgery to screw tibia back together first couple of days was pretty crappy- after that you get the hang of how many of what painkillers to take with so much beer and................whatever else to stay up all night and sleep all day because daytime TV sucks-- and then i had a pretty good time except for the fact your pretty homebound and the 20lbs i gained sitting on my ass-- nice little break from work if you can--HOORAY FOR DISABILITY INSURANCE!!!:highhorse:--- did the rehab and was back on the water in about 2 months and 4 months later id say im 90%:icon16:

what happens sometimes, you get a tear, for along time it is fine, it does not move or act up, then for some reason, you may turn a certain way, the tear, which if at the end may be like a flap, it gets turned, wedges in joint and there you go, your knee locks up. Because I have had 2 surgeries, sometimes I can just be standing there, and go to move and my knee wont, it is not painfull, but it does not feel right, have to kinda step back, loosen it up, then go to walk.

i got my minuscus removed (recovery time was way to long for a repair)..i never even went back to the doctor or did PT after the surgery and ive been 100% sense...i did tear my MCL in January when i went to Puerto Rico..i keep riding on it and it was sore as could be but i took it easy for a month or so and its pretty much back to normal now..ill probaly be wishing i didnt get it removed when im an old man cause the doc said it will probably lead to pain in the long run when im old

oh yea and i forgot to say i originally tore the miniscus when i was about 12yrs old waterskiing and didnt have it removed until i was 20 or 21..i couldnt bend my leg even half as much as the other..it was painful for that whole time and pretty much as soon as the swelling went away after the surgery the pain was gone

i am suffering with a miniscus and MCL right now... I got hurt the late part of the winter.. Got a MRI doc said schedule sur.. I told him summer is coming and its jet ski season.. he laughed and said How am I supposed to pay for my boat..He said get on a bicycle.. strengthen everything around it.. The worst thing is to baby it. Then all the stress goes on your ACL.. I have been racing alot (dirt bike) and jtskiing every weekend... I am not gonna lie it hurts sometimes and just gives out like walking up curbs but its very tolerable... my suggestion do it after summer like me...

Well it's a week after the injury and it began swelling much more throughout the week. I still can't come close to putting any weight on it. I have a surgery consultation on Monday afternoon. I am managing a project for work where I will have to put in a lot of on site time come October-ish time frame. I'm hoping they can get me in there now and take care of it sooner vs. later. Even if I can't ride jetskis the rest of this season, at least I'll be able to enjoy a beer or two on my boat.

Speak up ,don't kiss azz
I've had a torn miniscus for years now and it moves in between the joint from time to time and is extremely painful.

I must have a very minor tear compared to yours because it is painless unless it moves into the joint and POPS .

Well, you all better be careful out there riding this weekend. You know how bad things come in threes..... My knee has been bothering me for 6 months, it has kept me from training like i usually do. I finally broke down and went and had it looked at by an orthopeadic doctor...... initial diagnosis..... torn miniscus. He set me up for a MRI on Monday, having it read on Wednesday. I have always been as healthy as a goat. I have been lucky enough to never go under the knife, rarely get sick. SO, now I have to hope I can put up with this for another month and make it through Nationals, then get it fixed.

Douglee25, I feel for you bro.

Sounds just like me man. I'm scheduled for surgery this Friday.

Doctor is still saying no big deal. I feel differently. I'm not a fan of hospitals or anything associated with them. I'll have to see how it goes.

Good luck Scottie.
