It goes through a water softener to remove minerals before being used as make up water for the boilers. From what I've heard if you taste it, it tastes sweet and that's where the name comes from.

I think that's a crock, but I'm not willing to try anything full or salt and zeolite. The zeolite pellets are like ice if they get on the floor. Tiny little beads and you will fall and bust your ass.

Merry Christmas everyone!

In oil and gas, sweet is used to describe anything that isn't sour. Sour contains toxins like H2S.

From Wiki
The term "sweet water" (from Spanish "agua dulce") has been used to describe fresh water in contrast to salt water.[1]

Under normal and proper operating conditions, the SWS water has no significant levels of calcium, magnesium or iron -- the primary scale-forming inorganic contaminants of concern in boilers and cooling towers.

Basically it keeps the water/steam clean for the turbines so no rust forms on the turbine blades or boiler tubes.
