300/440/550 Michigan, title or registration only for stand up???

I just got 2 new (1995) 550sx standups...
EVERY stand up I have ever owned so far has a title.
The seller said he was original owner and only given registrations.
Sec. of State's website says under 20 foot no title unless owner requests it.
NOW I go to get them in my name and counter person says it has a permantly attached motor and I have to have title...
Anyone from Michigan have skis (7 foot long stand ups) without titles???
Thanks

Back in the day, the registration was also a certificate of ownership. It even had a place on the back to sign it over to the new owner. At some point, they started to require a title. If you take a Bill of Sale to the S of S, they can request a new title. I have done it many times. As long as the Vin# is good (not stolen), you should be good to go.

Michigan requires that you have the title, or the owner on record must be present with you to transfer ownership for pwc already registered in MI. The requirements vary for pwc coming from other states.

As fleabags said, there is a little yellow form called a "Ownership Certification" that you can fill out. That form along with a bill of sale will be sufficient to get a title. They do a search on the HIN to make sure that it is not reported as stolen, has a lien, ect which may take a few hours depending on how busy they are. I went through the same thing with a dirtbike I was trying to title. Here is an online link to the form, or they have them in the office: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/tr-205_16198_7.pdf

I had a buddy go through the same thing at SOS. What they had him do was post a bond (something like $100) and then they issued him a temp. title. After a year, if noone comes forward and claims the ski as theirs, they give you your bond back and issue you a title in your name.

What do they do for skis coming from other states. In Colorado as far as I know they dont title any off highway vehicles. Why do some states require titles and others wont title them.

They accept whatever the other state gives. However, be ready to provide proof since they probably wont know and wont just accept your word.
