Might buy a '14 superjet for $7k out the door?

Somebody said it before. THIS IS HIS FIRST SKI. He doesn't need a big motor or an aftermarket hull. He should either buy new for sake if new motor or financing (I wouldn't finanve, you buy what you can afford). A stock superjet might last him a week or 5 years before he wants to upgrade to more parts. I'd say look throughout the winter since season is going to stsrt slowing down. Find a good deal on a used stock (Wakerider26's) or go into dealership then because they don't want a jet ski as inventory during off season

LOL JK, the rest of your post was on point....

That's the only reason I'm kind of torn. I really want a good stunt ski. I've only been on the standups for about 2 months and I'm addicted! I know I'm not going to be doing back flips tomorrow, but I'd like the balls in between my legs to do it when I'm ready. I have a stock js550 and js330 right now I want something more. I'd know my limits if i had an aftermarket or modded though
On one hand I'd like to get a modded SJ or a used aftermarket
On the other I just want to jump on that new one then sell it when I need something even more. Decisions decisions. .

This is OP's second post in this thread. Perhaps some people missed it. I even had to go re-read it.... so yeah lets get on the same page.
  • OP has two skis currently
  • OP is considering stock or used AM
  • OP is considering buying new and selling and upgrading (we all agree that's a great way to waste money)
  • OP mentions wanting to do backflips and/or having the power to do it
So its not like anyone is trying to get this guy to drink the special AM hull koolaide from the 6oz Styrofoam cup.

He said he wants the balls between his feet. You can't buy that lol. But on a real note anything will be an upgrade coming from a js550. If the OP is in cali I have some skis you can try out if your interested in upgrading from a js550 and there are people near by with other skis that would be great starting points for you. Hey OPP where are you at anyways

I wonder what the shortest time any normal person with a normal budget has been able to learn to flip after buying his first ski. I have short summers up here but I still rode quite a bit and it still took me over two summers until I felt like I was ready to flip. Especially with a sj based driveline and small motor. Most riders will never get 1000cc plus motors with another $10k in bolt ons to make flips easy. So as alluring as backflips might sound, the fact is that it probably won't happen. I know guys with $15k+ skis who still can't flip. This is flat water obviously. Surf is completely different. New riders don't need aftermarket hulls or pimped out drivelines. Period.

Oh and you can barrel roll a stock 08+ superjet btw. Barely. But I've seen it. I like the idea of buying a new superjet. You could end up money ahead in the long run if you just keep it stock compared to all the repairs and maintenance on a lemon used ski. I know I had over $10k into my Sxr and it couldn't do anything better than a stock ski really at the end of the day.

One thing to keep in mind, not everyone who rides wants to do backflips.
Some people just want to do something after work. If a guy doesn't have $ 5,000 on hand for a used one, financing a brand new one is a good alternative in my opinion.

Time to go out ride, not much left of the summer up here.

I ride hard. Too learn. To get better. Pretty much always. Bikes, boards, or boats. I see so many people on here have a ski for a year, and think they need a b pipe, or 180 psi, or is that and a AM hull. It's comedy mostly. If you can't invert your sj from flat wi no wake, your hull isn't holding you back in the least. Your lack of skills is. Sorry.

People are asking to get hurt just jumping into a am hull. Teeth, faces, knees, and ankles aren't cheap. Let alone all the parts you buy cause the x told you. And then you sell it for 1/3rd the cost. Seen it happen a ton just since I've been a member of this forum.

2009 SJ. Not the best for freestyle by any means.
All stock
Footholds, steering and bilge pumps
Carves like an animal and it gets upside down..
Would love a am hull, but without a big motor... WHY? To do tiny flips with my head bearly above the water? and not enough power to do a 2 trick combo?
If your new to riding buy that 2014 for a good deal, Ride the dog crap out of it for the rest of this year and next summer get your skills up, then start modding it from there. comming from a 650 nothing is better then a turn key ski.. No wrenching just riding. all my wrenching entails is keeping my battery charged and mixing oil..

I'm new to the stand up scene, been riding couches for years. Bought my 2014 SJ 3 weeks ago for $6,920+ttl. Cheapest I've seen around here was $6,790 two days ago. Think it was a trick because it had a pic of a 2013 but said it was the price for a 2014. Didn't bother checking on it.

@mike b:
Couldn't Thank you enough for your offer, but I live in San Antonio Texas.

I ride at a lake for the most part. I am considering a trip to Corpus Christi to go ride some surf. Im just scared of putting my skis in salt water, even my 87js550 let alone an $7k machine

As far as financing, I can handle the finance.
I'm single, no kids, I make great money(oilfield), and I have 0 debt. Vehicles, house, motorcycles all paid for.

I'm very anti-finance, especially with toys. The only reason I'm considering financing the SJ (or even a personal loan for a used ski) is because at the moment I am building my house, I'm building it cash. I should be done in the next three months than my finances will be open enough that I can pay $2k a month towards the loan.

I've been riding dirt since I was 11, street since I was 15 and I still ride 10k miles a year on my bikes. I'm all about "not riding a machine you can not handle". I just feel like I would know my limits and the water is more forgiving than asphalt. I may want to try a flip at some point, but I can assure you it won't be tomorrow hehe. I will also use a helmet when I'm dogging the machine hard enough, and even on my JS, I never ride alone. Do AM/Modded machines have that many more issues than stock machines?

I'm looking into a personal/signature loan to possibly purchase a used machine on credit. Not sure ifi will follow through though

as far as riding style, I'm not into racing. I want to do flat water/tricks with time. If someone can convince me that salt water isn't "the devil" I would LOVE to hit some surf.

You guys are awesome! I love all of the feedback

They have the same problems any other used machine has. Stuff gets beat and worn out, but a good hull and a good motor from the aftermarket is as good or better than an SJ straight from Yamaha. Buy from reputable people that take care of their stuff and you'll be fine.

I think it's always the same argument. I don't buy much new as it drops value fast and it is always cheaper to buy a package that is close to what you want than to build it. Especially skis that can be completely taken apart and reassembled in a weekend

Soft isn't terrible and a bunch of people do it. But they usually take care of their equipment and that's why they last ling. That's the key to fresh water and salt water skis staying reliable is maintance. You could buy brand new and dog the chit out of it and your no better than used now. You sound like somebody who needs a pipe on his ski. Like guy above me said , find a person who takes good care of their stuff and buy from them.

Salt is fine. I wash everything then coat it in an oil or silicone. When there's any build up, I wash it down with simple green. Eventually things corrode but not riding a supejet in the surf because of salt is like saying you only ride your dirt bike on the pavement because the mud wears the brakes.
