Freestyle Mini van towing 2 skis (Michigan tags) headed north through Ohio on 1-20-13

I was headed back to Columbus Ohio on US-35, from skiing at Snowshoe WV when a mini van towing two skis passed me. Alum trailer witha Kawi and what looked like a Bob on it. Just wondering if it was anyone on here. The AM ski looked very nice. They were going about 80mph the whole way lol

Your state has a separate speed limit for trailers? Another example of when idiots make laws. I tow my trailers at the speed limit, regardless of size. I top out at about 65 with my toy hauler, but that's because my fuel economy drops dramatically at 70 vs 65. (12mpg at 65 vs 10.5 mpg at 70)

California is 55 for trailers in an otherwise 65 or 70 zone.

I got dinged for this. With no trailer the cop would not have even flinched for how fast I was going. With trailer, I got nailed for a few hundred.

is it posted well when you enter the state? I would have had no idea. 55 for a trailer is pretty ridiculous.

Yup, Nevada and Cali is 55 mph when towing trailer. I didn't know you guys are unrestricted....I need to get out more often. But then, when you're in Reno you got pretty much NV or Cali for 300 miles either way. Sorry to jack your thread, just had to explain myself. Back to minivan towing a BOB.................

Your legislators are idiots. Ours are too, but they apparently have less time on their hands than yours do.

Tell me about it... The CA law is stupid. Especially cause all the trucks are going 55 and everyone else is going 70 plus. It slows everything down and causes people to do excessive lane changes. I think it actually makes it more dangerous, especially in the 2-lane highways. You can either stay behind a truck and go 55-60 or be in the left lane and go 80. Theres no in the middle.

the 55mph for trailers is posted pretty much after every regular 65 or 70 sign - pretty hard to miss. at first I was like "this must apply to only 18 wheelers" but no, I have the ticket and (at the time) angry wife to prove it.

To the OP I think that was Rich from columbus in an Outback, he has a ROKR and a SXI.

We drove all the way up in a crown vic about 75 mph the entire was on blown wheel bearing, surprised we made it back LOL

You know, the speed limit of 55 in CA for trailers is not entirely due to "safety". I believe a big reason behind this IS environmental protection as the MPG's really falls from 55 to 65. Damn hippies!

I am sure that the 55 law is for safety and safety only.
55 in the slow lane is the law and it is a good one.
