I am sure that the 55 law is for safety and safety only.
55 in the slow lane is the law and it is a good one.

I'd have to disagree with you there, I feel it causes traffic to back up which leads to more tailgating, aggresive driving, etc. 55 on the interstate is way too slow if the speed limit is 65 or higher. I do a hell of alot of out of state hauling and I can tell you alot of my close calls while actually moving on the interstate where from some idiot just poking along.

gotta love wikipedia!

The National Maximum Speed Law (NMSL) in the United States was a provision of the 1974 Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act that prohibited speed limits higher than 55 miles per hour (89 km/h). It was drafted in response to oil price spikes and supply disruptions during the 1973 oil crisis.
While officials hoped gasoline consumption would fall by 2.2%, actual savings are estimated at between 0.5% and 1%.

However, this does not say why they kept it for trucks/trailers and not cars. Could be for safety indeed

Oh shizz the internet po-po is here. Most laws are good theory, but not used to protect anyone except the revenue streams of the local gov. I would love to see you try and make it through Atlanta traffic with that attitude. You go the speed of traffic or you get run off the road or possibly in a huge wreck. Why risk the lives of others by being the slow outlier?

What's wrong with going the flow of traffic and leaving some extra space when you have a trailer? Or are you the same guy who takes three years to pass a semi with your cruise control on. Bc you don't want to hit the gas, get around the semi, and get outta the way without breaking the law (speeding). In some states you can be ticketed for impeding traffic bc you are going too slow regardless of the minimum speed.
