Mixed up piston rings

Hi guys. I was tearing the cylinder apart to do a head and B pipe and stupidly popped the pistons out of the cylinders. I couldn't get the pistons back in so I took the rings off and stupidly forgot to label them.

So now I have 4 rings and a cylinder and no clue which ones go where. Is there any way to tell? I noticed the rings are tapered at one end. Do these go in the same direction? Any other way to tell?

The ski only has 20 hours on it. I rode it stock this summer with plans to do a head and pipe and a few other mods this winter. Is it safe to just put them wherever? What about measure with a micrometer? Thanks

Thanks @air blair . In your second sentence do you mean to see which ring goes where? Are they different sizes?

I was just reading some threads about dudes blowing up top ends due to incorrect ring install. I want to make sure I do this right. Anyone have a link to directions or a thread on this?

I was debating honing the cylinder and getting some new rings so its 100% right or is this overkill?

Since you have the rings off, might as well check their clearance to see if they are still usable. Too much or too little clearance is a problem.

Kind of like this:

1. Install the piston rings to the cylinder as shown (1) and measure the piston ring end gap.
2. If the clearance is greater than the specifications, the piston rings must be replaced.

I want it done right so I will probably just hone and new rings. Anyone have a link to ddirections on ring install?

Just lube up the rings and taper down on top and taper up on bottom and set on pins? Easy as that?

You guys use any glue on the base gasket or head gasket?

Yamabond, 1211, or permatex the right stuff.

Yes 2-stroke oil as it'll just burn off better than any shelf asm lube

Sounds like you need some help. Maybe try finding a local engine builder

Isnt that what this site is for? Lol.

Don't learn nothing when someone else builds it for you.

So you use yamabond on the base or just a new base gasket? Doesn't look like OEM has any bond.

I sometimes apply the thinnest layer possible to both sides of the gasket, but it shouldn't be necessary really. If you are re-using any gaskets do this. Do NOT re-use a base gasket. period.

Look at the ends of the rings. There is a step end them. Now look at the piston ring grooves. Find the retaining pin. You will see that the rings will only go one way and clear the pin. Gaskets. Three bond is fine bit not required. Best thing is to get a shop manual.

eBay I think probably. Perhaps you can even download one. Good for torque specs and tolerance numbers. Very handy
