Florida as well as Ga and Sc have riders that all get together at certain spots on Florida's east coast. The only reason I got a Facebook account was so I can meet up with other riders on surf days and it works really well. I think there is like 4-5 different rider groups based on each area of Florida.
For example, last Saturday was glassy and chest high all day long and about a crew of about a dozen riders from SC to St.Pete. Makes me wonder if Daytona was even open with a good surf report?
Daytona itself is very fickle anymore...when the surf is really cracking, a lot of times that is when the beach driving gets shut down for SCA - or beach safety will claim it is a SCA day. So having the NOAA up on a cell phone helps to dispel any BS SCA reason for closing. But when it is closed, those are the days we get together to ride out of the inlets. If there's any question that Daytona might not be open, we just do not even bother so we can focus on getting to a spot to go get on it because good clean surf is not normal for Florida and requires proper attention when it happens. Otherwise, it's a lot of washing machine action when there is any "surf".
I actually call the beach safety / life guard guys in Volusia before I head out to Daytona a day or so in advance to make sure they actually staff someone for the zone before I head out there. But I still get the yearly pass, and I still ride out there at least 5 or more times a year not including the freeride. It is nice to just launch right off the beach on nice warm day with a few riding buddy's' around - I think that's what makes the Daytona freeride what it is.
I ride all over the state of Florida - lakes, rivers, salt water creeks, inlets, beaches, the occasional state park, and any place I can fit an FX-1 into without creating too much unwanted attention!
Tons of places to ride all year long here no matter what part of the state you pick to live in!
CYA out there!
