MSD going cheap?

I just bought a brand new MSD Enhancer, it came in this week and to my surprise the bullet connectors on it are about as cheap as it gets. What gives? I bought a used one just recently and had to return it due to a problem with the limiter portion being faulty, but it had OEM style bullet connectors. This brand new one with a date on the back saying July 2016 has cheap red plastic connectors crimped on, what's about as bad is the wiring colors too lol. The instructions say connect the wires accordingly, and I get the jumper portion, but they say connect brown to brown/white...look at the pic...where does dark gray/charcoal become a part of the mix?

Did you get the charcoal colored wire too? I'm just paranoid of a wire falling out, I have never gone cheap on electrical. Soldering is the only way to go. As for that charcoal lead, although it was easy to figure out, it is also easy to mistake for black. My garage is not overly well lit and it was well past dark when I installed it. Me thinks this was a bad call on MSD's end, and to not include corresponding instructions...not good my friends, not good indeed.

Not yet, I will be this weekend though, I just got it and haven't had a chance to go through the contact form. I definitely will be though, not that I am unhappy with it, just a bit of concern and curiosity to see if I'm the only one so far. It certainly works as described on the trailer at least, both my stock CDI's would max out exactly at 6960 RPM, when I test fired the MSD, it got up to 7920 and still didn't hit the limit :D Tonight I'm taking it to the lake to see if everything is in check as far as timing curve response.

Everything on mine was as it should be, as far as I know. The instructions they included suck. I searched the internetz for a better set of instructions, and came across the diagram where someone actually colored the wires of the diagram. Made life so much easier.

I have had a few here for testing that had cheap connectors on them. I was never sure if customers had replaced them already or if they came that way.

If MSD says that they do send them out that way from time to time then I guess it is what it is but it really puts a mark against quality in my opinion. I've had wires slip out of those connectors before, crimping is the last ditch effort to me and should only be used for temporary patch work to get you out of a pinch. As much as I would hate the down time of waiting for a replacement unit, I do hope they recall it. I have seen so many crimps just simply not be tight enough and the wire backs out, being out a good distance from land and that happens...it's just not the place for such a poor quality item. The lawnmower sure, trailers sure...but never on marine applications.

Agreed, I sent them a message over facebook last night. I tried using their site but it wouldn't allow the message to go through. I also sent the company I bought it from the same message telling them my concerns and that MSD was going to be contacted for verification and if possible a replacement.

My buddy bought an enhancer about 6 weeks or so ago. Had the nice connectors but it was DOA. Whole new ebox and stator later we get a warrant replacement and it had the crappy connectors on it but it worked atleast

Same here for the last part. This one works, but I have no faith in crimped connectors. I sent MSD a facebook message with photos and have yet to hear back. I tried to send them a message at the very least through their contact section on their website but the site wouldn't allow the message to go through. The little progress indicator would lock up and that would be it. Even after about 10 minutes of hoping it was just in limbo and would finally go through, it did not, just stayed locked up. It's not easy for me to call them because I work on the hours they are open. It's only Wednesday though so if after Friday there is still no response then I will try the site again. I hope it was not a rush to get that batch out the door. If it takes 5 extra days then they should be taking it, just do it right the first time instead of corner cutting.

Curious to see how this works out. Im right about to pick one up myself. Ive always had good luck with msd enhancers but ive heard many stories about them crapping out or just never working over the years. Wish we had a better alternative for the guys wanting to run charging but want a upgraded curve and rpm limit....

I've got a dead one here too, got it second hand, looked to be in good shape externally. It kills the spark energy somehow so it looks like it functions but the spark is too weak to actually run the engine.

Update...well, not really. So the first time I inquired about the part number on a used enhancer I bought MSD responded to me both on fb and through their site within about 3 days. After not getting through to their site but getting a message off through fb about 10 days ago, and they have definitely seen the message, still no reply. I must say I am quite disappointed in their customer service, or lack of in the face of questionable quality. I opted to request a return from the company I bought it from. They now have to apply the return request to MSD and in the end I may get stuck with this thing having sub-par hardware store grade crimped on connectors anyway. Not a happy camper today fellas, not a happy camper with MSD.

Did you try calling? It is harder for them to hide from a phone call.
