MSD TL acting up!

Well, I think that one of my pick ups coils is acting up. The problem is that it won't do it continiously ... but when it does, it goes to one cylinder , then I'll let it sit for 5 minutes and she back up running perfect till next time. I already checked all my connections and they seem to be fine so that's why I'm suspecting the pick up coil (s) . This is a pro digital dual coil system .
I wish it would do it steadily but no such luck!:banghead: Is this a symptom of a bad pick up coil?

BTW, this started happening last weekend at St pete . I though the salt water was the culprit but it's doing the same thing back in fresh water
today.

Pop your flywheel cover off and check for water intrusion. That would be my number one guess.

Also, carry an ohm meter with you. Next time it happens, measure resistance across both pickups. Needs to be near zero,.

Thanks Matt! :biggthumpup:I got an xtra plate with pick up coils. I'll swip it out and see what happens. I'll also check the resistances on these pick ups too

Steve,

I noticed on your site that you have the coils mounted pretty close to the brain. Has this ever been a problem for you, or do you thinkthis might be the problem? I have mine mounted on the pipe side of the rear bulkhead (on the outside of the bolt hole) but I haven't actually run it yet.

MSD says six inches between coils and brain. I Have rain the brain on the fuel tank and the coils in the e-box location one year.
Then I switched to running everything on one plate.

Also, I have always ran non-resistor plugs.

Absolutely no difference for me either way, worked great.

I believe MSD states 12", but I have mine as does Wattage at about 10". Steve sounds like you have the same problem I had a year and a half ago. The wire to one of my pickups had an internal break in it. Perform a resistance test at the pickup connector. If it checks out, then wiggle the wires. If it gives fluctuating readings then there is a problem with one of the wires to that pickup coil. If you need a pickup or an ignition coil let me know. I have two new coils and two used pickups.

The wire to one of my pickups had an internal break in it.

When I ran MSD, I would glue the pickup wires to the pickup/stator plate with 3M to prevent problems from vibration. This was after going through 2 pickups and finding out they like the break the wires where they enter the plastic casing.

See my thread "Fixing & Foolproofing your total Loss", it describes the pickup problem and how to fix it.

By the way, those pickups can be fixed even after the break.

Never had a problem with this set up and I've been running it for over a year already

already checked the resistance on both coil but they checked out ok. I also noticed a bit of water (maybe a little salt too) in the stator area.

I'd say that is 99.5% of the problem, compounded by 0.5% of ********ty MSD Trigger design.
