MSD TL in the sea

I'm looking at getting MSD TL
For my dasa 1100, RRP pipe, 160 Maxx pump in an 16 XFS.

I ride 95% of the time in salt water.

Been discussing it with a few people and there seems to be mixed views on the best way to built it.

Cost isn't an issue so was looking at complete new kit and an RRP enclosure, but been told of a few leaking then you cant wash off the salt off etc. so a bit pointless.

Been advised to do an open build, the blowsion plate looks nice and use the minimum amount connections and dielectric grease on every thing. Can wash it off and spray over every ride then.

What's people's views on this?

How many of you are running open builds in salt water?

Cheers

I picked up a ski that has the msd pro digital TL totally exposed. it was ridden in fresh before I got it. I've had it in salt at blowsion and Pismo and it is starting to give me problems. it has the shifty mod and I think that is screwing up and the solenoid. sometimes it just cranks with no spark, then sparks when it dries out. I've heard salt eats MSD TL and it probably does. i'd put it in a sealed box for sure, to avoid problems.

Had one in rrp box with never any trouble in saltwater. I have a atp flame in a atp ebox that works great too. Open in salt is not a good idea.

XScream has customers overseas that ride salt and use their Kawi coil mounting plate because of the reduction in voltage. The MSD coils produce 50,000 volts according to the msd tech dept. XS makes two different mounting plates to accommodate MSD or Kawi coils.

Cheers for the reply's guys. I'm in two mind what to do.

ATM I have OEM ignition with MSD enhancer and just turn up, hit the start button and ride. I want more power but at the same time don't want to buy my self a head ache and leave me spanning on the beach.

Was looking at the Flame TS2. The posts about mass destruction do seem to be a year or so old now so maybe they have cured all the issues now, just worries me a bit. Do like that its in a sealed enclosure and as plug and play as you can get.

I have the atp ts2 in their sealed box, bought complete. First ride in the salt and it leaked so I pulled it all apart and sealed the glands and greased the o rings and now it works a treat, until it doesn't from being exposed, atp doesn't seem to care what happened either. I've also had msd tl on a plate exposed in the salt with zero issues. The key is good sealed connections (a mate once told me there's waterproof connectors, then there's Deutsche plugs) and dielectric grease on everything. If price isn't an issue get the msd and put it in a msd box. That way you have a waterproof setup, inside a waterproof enclosure

There is no MSD box. You mean RRP?

Dielectric grease everything.
Weatherpack or bullet connectors full of grease or soldered connections that are greased and shrink wrapped somehow or the connectors that you crimp and then melt to seal.
Salt will always eventually get to anything that isnt sealed no matter what so maintenance will be key.

My dvx had a open msd total loss setup on an XScream plate with msd coils. I've had it in salt many times. I don't use bullet or weather pack connectors only Deutsch connectors. Deutsch connectors are the only ones advertised to be waterproof instead of water resistant. I keep dielectric grease on my dip switches and run the backing plate with the piece of foam over the dip switches. Never had any problems.
