Msd Tl Timing Question.....

This is a famous discussion but I will call it one more time.

I did meet Steve (waterfreak) at his shop yesterday and he was setting a TL and we started to talk about it.

So... the question is:

The static timing is where the light first lights up or when it shuts off?

I ve running MSD TL for 2 years but as much as we know we find out we know nothing.

When it first comes on. There is quite a bit of difference. Verify with a timing light if unsure.

My mechanic always claim for a timing light method... he is old school motorcycle guy.

In my opinion it is whe it first lights up for sure.

Thanks guys.

It is...but you should still check.
I have to check, because my timing LED is burnt out.

Turn the motor CLOCKWISE when looking at the flywheel, then look for led light to COME ON.
Tip...turn the start retard and elec start switches to off when the led switch is on (in the led mode) when setting your timing in the static led mode.(don't forget to turn them back to the on mode when done, and turn the led switch back to off for the run mode.

great points chucky!
I also turn the led light off and electric start off to determine exactly when the spark occurs. It should be the same timing as when the light goes on (or off if your going counterclockwise)
