Super Jet Msd

Has any one ever had or heard of issues with the MSD Enhancer blowing top ends left and right at cruise speeds in Yamaha? I posted about my issues going through 6 top ends a while back and I have had some reputable places tell me that is almost definitely the issue. I guess the MSD advances the timing 6-7 degrees on the mid range which causes lots of issues. I am definitely taking mine out but just wondering if I can get some more solid feedback to make me feel like this might actually fix my ski finally.

Do you have the stator plate advanced already? I have heard of people doing that with an enhancer and blowing a top end/

No issues with my MSD enhancer, many seasons on it
dmac has a point; check your stator

Been running a MSD in my 2nd ski that hardly ever gets going, as normally my girlfriends:bigok: or friends are learning on it and I have never had a problem.

The issue seems to apply with out changing the timing at the stator from what I was told. Mine is not changed. I am sure riding style has a lot to do with it. I don't think you would see this issue in surf at all. Its mainly in the mid range area not WOT. According to Harry at WOT the timing is unchanged from stock so if you are an all or nothing rider you will never have an issue. Unfortunately for me I am stuck on the river a lot. Here is what Jet Ski Solutions replied with.

"Nothing in typical ignition will cause issues unless you are using the Enhancer with compression over 170-180. If that is the case, we suggest you use a programmable CDI like Epic or Advent."

And as for double thread I just figured most guys are super jet or blaster only but not both. I guess if you only look at recent threads it doesn't matter.

What carbs you running. Dual 38's all have a lean spot in the midrange when it's crosses over from low speed to high speed jet. If you ride around right in that area and already have added timing and compression from other mods it will be sure to blow.

I've ran MSD enhancer for years, Surf and flatwater skis, with 180+ psi, never had a top end let go.

Who is rebuilding the top end? Its pretty simple but maybe he is making the same mistake over and over.

Blip the throttle when running at a constant speed. I was always told to never run at mid range and cruise. I always blip the throttle.
Just my .02c my engine is 16 years old and the last person that assemble it was yamaha 16 years ago.

if your running the correct gas octane, the correct oil mix and the timing is stock, an enhancer will not blow your motor.

what on the motor is letting go?

I am running stock dual 38's. I never hold the throttle in one position constantly up and down other than maybe wot for 10 seconds here and there. The rings are failing every time, I run 40:1 93 octane. Compression should be in the 170-180 range if I remember right, no porting other than matching. Very simple build really.

have you tried switching piston manufacturers? also who did your chamfer job? a bad one on the same cylinder will eat pistons repeatedly.

I really don't think its the bore chamfer or anything my local builder is doing. He builds a lot of high performance stuff. Much more than my ski. I am definitely going to confirm my stator situation this week. Engine never gets to where water sizzles on it. It does seem to have a lot of carbon build up around the exhaust manifold on the rear cylinder which makes me wonder about air leaks.

Not sure about much yet. Ive had some one else build it last few times and Ive been too frustrated and busy to even look at it latley. Hoping to tear into it in the next week - week and a half.

So this time around I did not have any top end failure. Main bearing went bad but didn't take anything else out. Not sure if that could of added to all my top end failures in the last 18 months or not but I sure hope a new crank and a new CDI fix my life.
