muscle strain

Has anyone any advice? I have just suffered a quite bad calf muscle strain.
I first did it about 18 months ago jumping into a swimming pool, Then again very slightly 10 days ago so I rested it.
I was jet skiing yesterday (flat water freestyle) and I felt a POP in my calf muscle , it now hurts like hell!

I live in Thailand and the doctors here seem to feed the most pills they can to you and charge like a wounded bull , what can I do when it has recovered to stop it happening again ?

What can I do to speed the recovery?

My ski is very short hence rides and lands a bit nose up which I think caused my foot to be pushed up on landing.

Thankyou for any advice Nickwad

Two best things for any kind of muscle strain; water and stretching.
But it also depends on what type of damage you have. If you heard a pop then very likely you may have torn a muscle and the only best medicine for that is surgery(I suggest state side for that).
If it is anything else you need to rest it for a few days or until your not limping any more and start stretching it slowly. When a muscle is pulled or strained it contracts and tightens and if it is not worked or stretched out properly it will stay tight and always be painful when used extensively such as running or jetskiing.

ALWAYS drink lots & lots of water to flush out all the toxins from your body, especially now. And when your up to par and ready for the ski, pre-stretch and post-stretch with LOTS of water consumption!

I stretch before riding all the time and the difference in my riding is like night and day. Plus I'm not so sore the next day.
Hope this helps!

High quality fish oil is an excellent natural anti-inflamatory. Make sure it's the good stuff with a high % of omega-3's. Here's a bit of a guide:

"How to Check the Quality of your Fish Oil

The recommendations assume that you are taking pharmaceutical grade fish oil. This is a highly refined product which has had many of the pollutants and impurities removed and has a much higher concentration of Omega-3 fats. They are however very expensive.

You can get away with less refined fish oils. Look for ones where EPA and DHA levels when added together are around 50% of the total amount of oil.

e.g.

Each capsule contains:
Fish Oil 1000mg
which contains:
EPA 300mg
DHA 200mg

300mg + 200mg = 500mg which is half of the 1000mg of total fish oil.

Then you need to put some of the fish oil into the freezer overnight. In the morning cut open the capsules and if the oil hasn’t frozen, then you’re onto a winner. If the oil/liquid is frozen solid – do not use that fish oil!!!
How Many Fish Oil Capsules Should I Take?

Then you need to workout how many capsule to take in a day. To do this add together the EPA and DHA figures (these are the Omega-3 fats) – in the example above this comes to 500mg. As an example, if we wanna be taking 5 grams (5000mg) of Omega-3 per day, then if we’re using the above brand we need to take 10 capsules.

You’ll wanna split this dose. So you could take 4 in the morning, 3 at lunch and 3 in the evening, or if you eat 5 times per day, take 2 with each meal – it’s up to you.

From personal experience, fish oil is magic – but you need to make sure that you take the right doseage and that you take high-enough quality oil."

Great post, Omega's 6 & 9 are over abundant in everything we consume and are what our bodies use to inflame joints and muscles upon injury and it's the 3's that are required to bring the swelling back down during the healing process.

This is the brand I use. http://www.innatechoice.com/ I'll be interested to see how is does in your test.

Thankyou all for replies, What surgery can be done on a torn muscle?

I will go out and try to get some fish oil right now.

What sort of recovery time can I expect roughly if I have torn the muscle, It has been 48 hours since I did it and I can walk slowly putting weight on that heel only but with the foot flat. With my foot up I have got near full movment without much pain, But if I put the ball of my foot on the ground and put wieght on it it hurts alot.

Does any of this give an indication of the severity?

Thanks again Nick

bro....was there any dark spots a day or 2 after the pain?
they would be blood spots and that would mean a tear happened.....no blood....no tear

I have 3 minor tears, so i know what i am reffering to.....( 20 years of bodybuilding will teach u the body)

anyway.....Rest and ICE.....

and a strain should be healed by know....or close to it anyway

As long as its been past a few days, Id say go ahead and massage it with a tennis ball or something similar and light stretching afterwards at least 2x per day till it starts healing. Don't be surprised if other muscles are knotted up as well, and it may be a good idea to get a professional massage to further prevent issues down the road.

Everything is linked. Regular massage to your calf and foot muscles relieve a lot of tension which can be seen in the hips. Don't forget to strengthen your gluteus maximus as well(look up glute activation), as this alleviates a ton of ankle issues.
