While we are talking about the 1200 conversions.... I have someone that has been saving an XL 1200 for me for cheap. They live 4hours away though and that's the main reason I haven't gone to pick it up yet. I would like to find another Blaster to put this 1200 in though. My plans for this Blaster is to race the IJSBA Sport Spec class next year so I will probably stick with the 701 engine. I would like to find another Blaster to put this 1200 in though. I see how fun they can be with insane acceleration so maybe I'll get tired of the 701 and put it in this Blaster if I can't find another donor but I figured for the price, I can't pass up that XL 1200. I'll at least have a good 1200 powerplant.

Most people that do the 1200 conversion use the non-powervalve motor. In the case of the XL hull, only the 98 has that motor. Im not sure the pipe from the 1200r will fit.

Tried the lacquer thinner yesterday. It did take it off but took some time. Even with it coming off, the blue paint underneath is not the same. I have plans to remove everything out of the hull this winter so I can prep/paint inside and outside of the hull. I'll just deal with this paintjob for a couple of months.

The hood looks kind of neat in the pictures. Im sure it looks like crap in person. But the flat blue works with the flat black. I think you should use a little more lacquer thinner and take off some more in a pattern on the sides. From 50 feet it could look good.

Hate to say it, but that is an XL1200 Limited with the 66V PV motor. It won't work in your Blaster :(

Dang I didn't know that, thanks for the info guys! No big deal though. I'll just keep my eyes peeled for a non pv 1200. I mainly wanted the 1200 just for fun rec riding. Looks like I'll be sticking with the 701 a little longer and doing the sport spec class as I originally planned. I had just missed a deal on a GP1200 too. Dang.

You might want to look into the kawi motor. They are small, lighter and use a 2" exhaust. Prices are about the same. I have been lead to believe you can crank more horsepower out of them. I prefer the torque-y-ness of the Yamaha, but the kawi seems to be popular amoungst the racers.

Did some work on the Blaster today while I am waiting on a coil to arrive from OCD Solutions. I cleaned the carb real good, pulled out the internal filter and it had some trash in it so I cleaned that all out. Pulled the gas tank to drain the old pre-mix gas. It hasn't run in over a year and had about 1/2 tank of old gas. Sprayed some degreaser in the hull where the tank was and tried to just clean things up a little bit. Got most of the dirt and grime out of the engine bay now and it's looking a little better. Here are some pics.

You can see some of the trash that was in the internal filter here.

sweet score!

did you by chance try taking any of the spray paint off the actual hull? top hood piece is different from the rest of the hull

Good thing you mentioned this. I didn't realize they were different. Just tested it out for about 5mins late yesterday and it came off alot easier on the hull vs the hood. Still a pain to do but much easier. I'll probably work on it a little bit at a time until I get it back to blue.

Well, the Blaster has been running good the last couple of weeks. I put a Blowsion aluminum pump shoe + Solas intake grate on. Wanting to get more speed out of this but not sure which way to go. Right now it is running 45.5mph on GPS with me on it (weigh 190). I have a few questions and I'm open to recommendations on engine mods for more speed/acceleration. Wanting to keep stock cylinders and possibly upgrade to 62t cases this winter.
  • I'd like to get big dual carbs on. Once you go to duals, do you have to upgrade CDI?
  • How much can you shave off the flywheel? I have access to a machine shop at work and they will shave it for me but need to know how much to take off.
  • What is the price difference in a dual 38 setup vs dual 46 or 48?

I personally wouldn't waste my time with dual carbs while still running 61x cases.i upgraded my single 44 to dual 44s and found bugger all difference on 61x cases

Stick with the single carb. You are going to want to see what impeller you have and if it is stock or if banged up you will want a better one. Great impeller for bottom end and top end was the Solas 14.5/18. A great way to get huge improvements for free is to tune your pipe and carb. =)

Thanks for the info and yeah, I agree.... I really need to tune this thing. I haven't messed with any of the 3 adjustments on the exhaust or jetting.
