My $400 score!!!! STOKED

So yesterday my coworker who knows I do powersports shows me a facebook local ad showing two yamahas that need lots of work for $650. I act IMMEDIATELY cause I know it won't last long. I ask the guy to text me and within 10 minutes the deal is made to pick them both up at 8pm for $400!!!

I knew from the dark picture that one was a Waverunner III. I knew the other was a ratty GP but I was thinking a 760. You could only have guessed how surprised I was when it was a 1200.

Well after I got home and put the kids to bed...it was to late to play so I went to bed. At 730 this morning I started in on the waverunner III because honestly...I needed that 650 motor for a perfect condition VXR I have that I robbed the 701 for my WB1. The 650 didn't have a carb but a compression and iginition test showed great spark and 150psi in each cylinder. My guess is someone pulled the carb back in 2002(last registered) and it got lost or??? Well pouring gas straight into the intake yielded a very excited motor and once I slapped on a trashy old 44 I had...she idled like a dream and revved out strong! I made quick work of pulling that motor and grabbing a few other bits I wanted.

Then it was onto the GP1200. It didn't want to key start and the display was so trashed I couldn't tell what the licorice was goin on. So I pulled the box and jumped the solenoid to start getting some numbers. Great spark and good compression (135,130,135). She is still on oil injection which is a decent sign but will be tossed in the future. I left it alone for a while cause I was tired of jumping the solenoid and no way in hell would it fire anyway since it hasn't run in 5 years. Well this afternoon I had wrapped all the other projects up and went back to the GP.

I quickly diagnosed the fact that the display was sometimes allowing the key start to work intermittently. So I grabbed the switch from the waverunner III and it was cranking EVERY TIME. I poured some fresh premix in the airbox and hit the magic button. After every reattempt...she did better and better and then...LIFT OFF! She sounded just like my 97 1200...full of badass and ready to rip. I poured some fresh fuel in the tank cause I plan to run it on the hose soon but now comes the REAL dilemma....the Waveblaster has been BEGGING for a 1200 swap and this ole girl may just provide it!!!

I've done a ton of motor swaps and fab work in cars but never a waverunner. I have a BMX bike with a Puch 50cc that does a GPS'd confirmed 39mph. LOL. Have a 79 VW Rabbit with a 1999 engine, 2002 trans, hydro clutch, etc, etc. All my fab work. So it's not the work...just wondering if it will be worth the work. 135hp sounds tempting!!! 6 gallons won't last long! Lol.

wow nice pick up

So yeah...over dinner with the wife I definitely decided the blaster is getting the 1200. No reason not too. I have most everything and the plates are pretty inexpensive. Those plates from rad dudes seem awkward. I'm unsure how they will bolt in and if I can use the stock WB1 or GP1200 mounts. But yeah...those mounts look nice!

Very nice score! But do yourself a favor and rebuild the 1200 carbs and check them over well before installing in the Blaster. I would hate to see you get it all done and burn up a piston from a lean condition!

The 1200 will definitely rip in the blaster, just keep in mind the added weight does affect it's overall handling. Flat water riding aRound is great but it does make the blaster a lot heavier to jump, and takes away some of it's flickability. The added weight though does aid in ripping turns.

I did the 1100 Yamaha triple in a blaster and really liked the power but sold it to go back to a 701 setup cause it was just to heavy for what I like to do in the waves. I actually bent the extreme throttle kit in less than 20 mins of riding in the waves, and had the motor rubbing on the bottom of the hull, and ended up going with the Ada kit instead.

Before u do it just decide what kind of riding u like to do and go from there. It's definitely a cheap donor ski, it's a straight forward swap, and the triple has it's advantages and you'd like the added power forsure. I just know the triple just isn't for everyone and every type of riding style or conditions.

If I didn't have Great Lake waves at my disposal and ride flat water I'd definitely stick with a triple. But for wave jumping I like the weight of the twin.

Oh and if u do the swap definitely go with the Ada racing kit, really nice and beefy piece, and u can retain the stock motor mounts.

Great find!!! I had similar luck when I picked up my Blaster and Jammer. I was asking around if anyone had any old skis I could buy for a project. One of my friends said she had a trailer with a couple old Waverunners that she had sitting in her driveway taking up space. She said she was about to haul them off to the dump because the didn't run. She told me to pick them up free of charge. I wasn't about to turn down a pair of free skis that were destined to be scrapped. I should up and found my Blaster and Jammer (very dirty and not running). I feel very lucky! I hope you enjoy your find as much as I have mine!

JetX - thanks bro. The entire 701 setup is being shelved for that VERY reason. I actually don't ride much. But unfortunately there is more lake riding with no waves than surf. When I do ride surf...I'll enjoy the extra power since I really don't go to big.

Basically the swap will pay for itself so it's worth it for me to do it. I can always sell the swap down the road if I don't dig it enough but I'm kinda stoked to get it done!

98yota - DAMN BRO!!! That's amazing! Lucky licorice! LOL

kurtwolf - yes sir. That was already in the plans. I'm pulling the head too. I don't half ass swaps.

Yeah and change the check valves in the carbs and clean the filters minimum.

If you want loads more bottom end richen it by half a turn from stock ;)

Worth every minute of the swap. ADA and Rhaas all the way! I ride surf and have not noticed much, if any, negative about the extra weight. The second you pull the trigger, it erases any extra weight and replaces it with a smirk and smile. Having 135 stock, reliable horsepower is a nice thing in these small skis. I did the full GP1200 exhaust though, it's correct for the motor.

Good luck and post pictures!

Yeah what squid said.. You MUST do the full 3" exhaust including all pipes and outlet or you'll cook the pistons..

I have a build doc on this conversion with pictures and links / tips if you want it - drop me a PM with your email and I'll blast it over.

Jim

Squid - thanks bro. I'm a speed demon so that sounds exactly what I want. The extra weight is worth it to me. I put a VR6 in a 1985 VW Golf and that made the front end a little heavy too but damn that extra power is worth it!

Jim - my email is vdubspeed@yahoo.ca NOT .com. I didn't know how to use the interwebs in 96 and signed for the damn canadian yahoo. LMAO!

I deffo plan on being 3 inch the entire way. I love the way my stock 97 1200 sounds and want the same from this one. Anyway...yesterday the gp gave up the big block.

I'm taking the blaster to the lake today to ride the 701 for the last time most likely. LOL

What seems "awkward" They bolt to the motor and then you bolt the motor to the mounts. Uses stock WB1 mounts. Like said above the Rhass mounts that we also sell are a great upgrade and wrty for life. Do it once and do it right.
And any questions just ask, we have sold and built more trip swaps than anyone out there.

and if you want to to sound real bad a$$ do 3inch into that box and dual 2.5s out to 2 tips 1 on each side. The 1200 we built last year sounded unreal

"Awkward" was an incorrect choice of words. Let me rephrase...I was ignorant a few days back but have now seen pics. I'm definitely using the ADA parts

Ok cool. Just let me know when you need a set. You will be shocked how easy this swap is. Only thing easier is the kawi trip because you don't need to deal with that big pipe. and you can set the motor back a bit.
