My first 701 build, what do you think?

Hey everyone,

I am building my first 701 and I just wanted to see if you thought I was on the right path or if I am missing anything.

I have a square nose that I am going to do the 701 swap on. I ride flatwater and freestyle and I have outgrown my 650.

My 701 so far:

62t Case that had the fingers cut out and it has been epoxied, unknown who or what they did
61x Cylinder stock, bored to 82mm to clean it out with Pro-x pistons
Stock crank
44mm Blackjack carbs
64x intake manifold
61x stator and cdi, cdi has rev limiter by protec
Lightened 61X flywheel, 3lbs done by protec
I have a solas impeller, do not know the pitch
I am going to buy an ADA girdle head, unless you recommend something else

Questions:
What cc chamber should I get for my ADA head? I plan on running 91 octane non ethanol or 93 octane ethanol
Do pump cones make a difference and should I buy one? What cone is good?
Should I bore my nozzle? To what size?
Does changing the waterbox do anyting for me?
What flame arrestors should I buy? or are they all about the same just different looks
Should I buy an angled reed valve spacer? Do they do much and what degree angle should I get.
My current 650 setup has a Coffman exhaust, would it be ok to just port it to the 701 specs?
Is there a difference between the Coffman and B-pipe?
And should I have my cylinder ported by someone before I go through the trouble of putting this into the ski or will the current setup be fine for flatwater square nose fun.

I should add that I am looking for reliability. Once the motor is in, I am hoping not to touch it and tune it again.

I just realized that I started this in the wrong section. I moved it over to the superjet section. Is it possible to delete this one?

Ada has a dome size chart, but it can be off. My 35cc domes gave me 210 psi. I have 37cc domes 1mm over bore 170psi. You should double check on the 91 octane. I know 93 is normal for 180psi. I use 93 with ethanol. I am very pleased with my ada girlded.

I havent ran a cone on my superjet but i have on the x2 and it was a good improvement for our setup. You tune a pump like you tune a motor. Dont jist throw parts at it. Select parts towards a specific goal. They are cheap and easy to change later.

Im happy with my stock rn nozzle but i also run bouys. The bigger nozzle helped the x2 but thats because of a slight overprop. I think you should run the stock nozzle and bore it later if you want to trade some top for bottom.

I like my stock rn waterbox. The sn has a composite box that can break. Personally i wouldnt change it. Seems to me like mobey is better spent else where first.

I personally like the stock rn airbox because the motor stays drier. I actually modified one for my x2. There are slight differences in filters and adapters. Procs have a reputation for seperating. I have tornadoes on my stock blaster and they are nice, but the b1 hull is very dry. I cant get water in the motor if i try.

You should probably not buy a reed spacer.

I dont know much about the coffman.

I am very happy with my b-pipe, but maintain it and the screws so it doesnt turn to junk. I have a mod pipe. Setup dual cooling.

I personally dont prefer a ported motor as of yet. My stock motor with bolt ons is a lot of fun, is very reliable and has very smooth consistant power. The ported motors ive ridden are more pipey, so yes some more power but i personalky prefer very smooth over a little more power. That is personal preference, lots of people wil tell you to go that route, so porting is going to be a decision you have to make based on changes to your power band and your budget.

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to say that I have VFORCE 2 reeds if that changes anything.

I was looking at the ADA chart and was getting confused. It says a 35, 36, and 37cc dome should be run at 91+ octane. I was thinking about running 36cc domes just to be safe which would put me at 177lbs according to their website.

The blackjack carbs i bought were jetted for the motor I bought. The motor had a B-Pipe on it when the carbs were jetted and I am trying to figure out if coffman and b-pipe are close enough to not have to jet the carbs and mess with them.

35 ccxs domes for your head. get an ada girdled head. Nobody can tell you exactly what size nozzle or if you should use a cone or not. A lot of that comes with the tuning process. I'd say it's safe to start with an 85mm bored nozzle and experiment with a stubby pump cone to see if it improves it. I personally run an 84mm nozzle and stubby cone with a ported 701 with a head and b pipe and it works great for me. You're running dual 44 blackjack carbs...get a different pipe. Get a b pipe and don't look back. Flame arrestors are a waste of money . Run OEM but only run 1 screen in each. Don't know about the reed valve spacer.

Your ski will suffer without having the cylinders ported. You are missing out on SO much power especially since you've got the big carbs. Porting will wake up your engine a ton. I would never build a 701 without porting. You'll be surprised. Plus, when you decide to port the cylinders you'll have to retune again anyways. Send your cylinders off to a reputable builder and he can guide you in the right direction for every other mod as well. Just bolting together a bunch of parts doesn't mean you're gonna have a killer ski. Got to make sure you tune it well. It's safe to say you should most likely switch to a 9/15 impros hooker for more gains as well. There's a lot to it!

Squarenose waterbox will work fine but it is highly recommended to ditch that heavy box for a metal one that won't leak and crack like stock squarenose ones do. If you do everything I said, i guaruntee you'll be satisfied for a while once you get it tuned.
But more importantly, what is your budget?

In my square I run this:
61x ported cylinder by HPE, 61x stock unmodified case. Carbon tech low tension reeds with a 44mm single mikuni carb, 1 screen in stock flame arrestor.
B pipe limited chamber with headpipe and exhaust mani punched out and matched to 49mm. Ada girdled head with 35cc domes(pump gas). 9/15 hooker prop, stubby cone, 84mm straight bored nozzle. Modded protec cdi(switching to programmable soon however). Besides melting a piston in the tuning process, my ski rips HARD. So far I've got a solid 20 hours on it running very very hard, lots of WOT and extended high rpm rides with no issues. I run dual cooling with both inlets going into the exhaust mani, and it gets plenty hot. Also use a flow control valve in the line to the stinger with the necessarry restrictions.

Some builders I'd recommend; @holeshot (he did my cylinders, and they rip hard), @Blue @Nuklear6 xscream, and art at jetworks. None of them will steer you in the wrong direction. Good luck!

Thanks for the response,

Its helping me out a lot. I have been in contact with Nuklear6 about porting. Depending on turn around time I may wait til winter to have it ported. I am also going to contact Art about the carbs I have. I am hoping that I can run the Coffman exahust with the jetting he did for now. I have the money for everything to finish what I have right now with the exception of the exhaust. I am really hoping that I can use the Coffman for now and than do that over the winter also. That way it will give me time to sell my Coffman, if its worth anything. It seems like everyone runs B-pipes lol.

Run non ethanol no matter what... Or you will be tuning again sooner or later. Small engine= NO ethanol

We just got 91 octane non-ethanol here. Its the only non-ethanol gas I can get. I wish they would offer it in all octanes :-( Someday......

I agree, that is why i am nervous about putting the 35cc dome in it, but it does say 91+ on ADA's website. I will have to give them a call.

You said 62t cases and a light 61x flywheel, these are not compatible if I'm understanding your post correctly.

I just installed a mild ported motor, and I also ride buoys, the added power is really nice for pulling thru turns. My motor has a slight amount if case porting and the transfers have been matched better, nothing crazy. Power is a smooth pull. This is with stock 38 sbns and a mod chamber b pipe, 82mm wisecos, and 210psi ada girdle head on race gas. Tall k&n filters, boyesen pro 37 reeds, handling mods etc in an old style hull.

The "on, off" power I've heard has something to do with larger carbs. I'm going to test this out soon as I have some novi 48s I'm going to try in a few weeks.

Flywheel and cases are fine. He's running a 61x stator so he's covered.

Ah ok, that's a new one to me, I also have a lightweight flywheel, much more mid range pull.

Also change your motor mounts, for sure. Rhaas mounts are so much better than stock. Worth every penny.
