My Groups Emergency Towing Setup

So after the worst day my buddy's and I have ever had skiing (my battery died in 7 ft surf and bluegtate had a bad ground), we are gonna make a tow rope system for all of our skis. So here is what I am thinking.

We all just ordered tow loops from watercraftwerks or have put on a loop through the bow eye bushing that will stay permanently on the ski.

Then we are all going to carry a tow rope setup one way or another. One side of 4-5 foot rope is going to be a carabiner. The other end is going to have another carabiner and this little do-hicky I found on parker yamaha

http://www.parkeryamaha.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=19653

We'll use the little adapter deal when a standup is towing and a carabiner for when a tow ski that has no bushing holes is assisting.

So I want to carry my tow rope in my stock fire extinguisher container on top of my stock hood, but I still need to carry a fire extinguisher. So I guess I'm now looking for extinguisher relocation bracket. I don't want to pay $80 for the blowsion one... does anyone know of another company that makes one? Or can any one fab a couple up?

I haven't searched yet, but maybe a mini fire extinguisher would still fit in the stock container and I can just put the rope on top of it. Any body got any links to mini fire extinguishers? Thanks in advance.

most people have tow loops on the front and rear. then they have rope with a beaner on each end wrapped around there waist a couple of times.

The mini extinguisher is sold at Wal-Mart, something like $9.50 or so.

It's called a "kitchen fire extinguisher. The pic on the box is somewhat misleading because it has a hood over the head that hides the top of the extinguisher. Made by Kidde.

That just happend to me at the weekend, my starter lead terminal fell apart.
Mabe longer than 4-5' so the skis dont dump on each other. I use two loops on the skis and a rope with to clips either end about 4m long.

because it's easy to get to. you won't need to relocate your fire extinguisher either.

Oh, I thought you meant when towing they have it around their waist.

So I get what you mean... you kinda wear the rope like a belt? I like that idea, but my dumb asz would not remember to dress my self properly every time. Its hard enough for me to get all the proper gear together for each ride. I hate those trips when you make it all the way to the launch ramp and your missing a glove or a booty.

I have found when a stand up is towing a stand up it seems easier with a shorter rope. It helps keep the nose of the ski being towed up b/c it is kinda riding on the flow of water from the jet pump. It sucks when your towing a stand up and the front just want to keep diving under water, so your filling it up the whole tow back. I have used my limiting rope a couple times and it could have been about a foot longer for my liking but worked very well.

As far as the fire extinguisher.... i strap mine on top of the battery with the oem straps... They will fit just gotta pull tight...

it has held great....

so you guys have been surf riding all this time with no tow ropes?!?!?!?

that blows my mind as to how many people do that.......good way to DROWN!

tow rope around your waist....no longer than 4-5 feet...you want the ski's to travel as one unit....

tow loops for the FRONT AND BACK....that way you can quick clip your carabiner and be gone...tryinig to make a slip knot with a tow rope in emergency situations can cost a finger

a proper rescue should take no more than 10 seconds....

when a rider goes down and needs a tow.....he/she shouold attatch the rope to their own bow eye, and hold the other end of the rope up in the air as a signal.....

when whoever is towing you in gets to you......lock the carabiner to rear loop of THEIR ski (it should not be shut down, nor should the rider dismount)......that way the tow-ER, does not run the risk of losing their ski as well.......

we have towed in the gnarliest of conditions and have it to a science.....there have also been a couple of "learning situations" that all of the crew Im sure would rather forget

I was absolutely dumbfounded as to how many people showed up to Daytona without loops on their ski's....and was doubly dumbfounded at how many people just stared at me (at least 4) when I was floating holding a tow loop in the air....

sorry if my feathers seem ruffled, I get a little hot about this topic....

What if it goes off in bilge area?????? Yuck poss. trashed motor. The short Kiddie will fit with 6' tow rope. If you tie a loop in end of small enough tow rope you only need the loop on front of towed ski and clip on one end of rope DONE easy and CHEAP.
Just push the loop through stern hole on towing ski and run rope back through it. Then just clip other end on bow loop of towed ski.

I would rather have a tow rope than a fire ext. any day and thats how I roll usually.
I saw the same thing you did Scott. I was towing one guy (who remained nameless :dunno: ) and saw another floating when I hooked him up. I got 1st boat to beach and went back out and this dude was still friggin floating UNFRIGGIN BELIEVABLE. I got near him shaking my head just as someone pulled up to get him. So like 4-5 mins. waiting on help??????? BTW, I found out later the beach patrol ski was broke down and floating as well. At 1st I saw him just sitting there and thought WTF I guess they dont tow.

I am the only person in the St. Louis crew that carries a tow rope. At times the Mississippi is like playing in highway traffic and the rope is a good thing. I have had to pull it out many many times.

We need more riders with ropes than just me and tow loops!
