My ski is sitting at the bottom of the ocean

Went riding today at Redondo Beach CA. My ski completely sunk, it is at the bottom of the sea (salt water). We could not salvage it today, best case scenario we can get it tomorrow morning.

Question is, since it will be sitting in salt water for at least 24 hours if not more, what will be completely destroyed/unusable?

There was a ski at Daytona this year that spend the night under water. He had it apart and flushed out the next day, and got it running! Maybe someone will chime in that knew him.

Sorry to hear. I don't know much about ocean currents and waves, but I'd be worried it's not going to be in the same area it went down.

In fresh water the key is to get it running as quick as you can and run it a long time to dry it out. Unfortunately I'd guess with salt and 24+ hrs your past that point. If you find it, the air hitting it will do even more damage fast, so get everything torn down / flushed and cleaned ASAP. If you can't do it right away you'd be better off dunking it back in fresh water til you can.

Pull the motor apart right away cause sand will be in every thing. Rebuild your Carbs immediately. If you live far from there and it’s gonna be more than a few hours for you to pull apart the motor after you get it out of the salt. Put the motor in a oil coma. Pull the plugs and try to get the salt out but not by turning over the Motor then fill with oil and same with carbs. Even spraying fresh water inside the carbs and motor then fillling with oil is a hell of a lot better than salt sitting in there for a few hour drive home.

No foam will keep the ski closer to the sinking point, so might actually work to you're advantage. On the other hand you will prob have to dive for it.. get a bunch of gallons of fresh water and as soon as it gets to the surface strip everything and dump fresh water on it then spray wd-40 over it. Most will salvage as long as you clean quickly..
That's got to be a horrible feeling..

Every time I read of a sunk 'ski I think is there some way it could be avoided? In my mind I have visualised a single-use device consisting of a Co2 cartridge discharging into an inflatable bag via a (water) pressure-activated switch - 'ski sinks, switch is activated and inflates bag giving positive buoyancy, 'ski rises to surface. Device attached to engine bed plate so it cannot dislodge.

That's the concept. I don't have the nouse to make this myself...maybe somebody else does???

Regarding more immediate matters, I wish you all the best in your recovery operation and hope it goes well.

i saw the guy at daytona that sank his q8 1200 and talked to him for a bit. they found it washed up on the beach about a mile away the next morning. his battery cables were shot but he pulled the engine out took it to a local shop or someone he knew and got it all disassembled and cleaned up. surprisingly his msd total loss was still good. he did have it running the next day after everything was taken apart and cleaned out.

Dude it's a complete teardown and rebuild at this point whatever you do don't hit the green button dry out the electronics those should be good rinse with a lot of fresh water
