Well I've had to much free time lately so I thought I'd try something new. For about a week I've been reading about stand up jet skis and I think I could be hooked. Ive never actually ridden one but it looks like something in between mx and wakeboarding. Anywho I found myself a project- '88 650sx. The guy I bought it from said he had it out on the water a week ago and it seems to start/run good. New battery and starter, stainless impeller. other than that, looks mostly stock. Thats the good news. The bad news is it need some serious cosmetic work. It's got some minor cracks here and there in the hull but there is pretty big (5") one that might even go all the way through the hull in the front. Never done any work with fiberglass but I figure thats the whole point of this is to learn somethin new. I figure if I'm gonna be doin all this sanding and refinishing anyways I'll probly paint it and wrap it in turf as well. And the chin pad is shot. Also the 'hood' has a big hole on top that I'm assuming should have something over it. The intake grate was also busted but I've already ordered a new one. I also figure I better get a lanyard hooked up because I doubt I can just not fall. So I guess this is just a little introduction. And any tips on any of the problems I mentioned would be greatly appreciated.

Here she is. Got it stripped down and started sanding through what ever kind of sealer he put over that crack. decided i need to invest in a power sander. also what is the name of the thing that should be covering the hole hood in the last pic. I either need one or need to know alternatives.

You're missing the plug and rubber gasket for the top of your hood. There's also an aluminum bracket and chain that connects to it and bolts to the bottom of the circular pole pads that are on the top of the hood. The plug is just a plastic cap with foam in it that fills that hole. Put up a "want to buy" on it...someone has to have one they don't need.

Now The question is: What color turf to get? I'm thinking pink, purple, or lime green

I think you should go with black, but considering your 3 suggestions, it's obvious you like loud colors.

Of those 3, I'm favorible to the pink.

Your chin pad is damaged and heavy. Consider getting some hydro turf padding and just turfing the pole instead of a pad. You can use the padding to feather out the big dip in the front of the chin pad, bland it flat and leave the bolts exposed incase you need to work on your steering (or not because you will likely never need to touch those bolts...).

Turf the rails with the same color as the tray. If you use trim, only use the very front part on the nose, paint it gloss black, and have turf the rest of the way back.

Your turfed rails should start in the back, and when you run out of turf, cut at a 45* angle and continue so the seam is stronger (front part over laps the back part and keeps water from getting under the seam).

i bought purple haha. and its the straight groove stuff so i was thinking when i but two ends together could i kind of jigsaw the seam together along the ridges. i figured it would strengthen the seam and not look as noticeable. thoughts?

and i was planning on turfing the chinpad, but could i turf the plastic chinpad with padding? and turf rather than covering the bolts and such. I know I will probably never need to get to the bolts since they are just for the floats but, in my head i figured i could just turf the chinpad rather than the pole?

also what lubricates the flywheel and bendix when i throw out the oil system and go with premix?

and as for the loud colors, yes i was actually planning on doing something similar to this
