Need a short aftermarket hull, decent engine all setup and tuned right and a bunch of practice and skill. Bigger engine is easier, depends on how much you can spend.

Hey Brian. Unless you are planning on riding ocean surf to get some flips done, you're looking at spending about $15,000 minimum and a lot of time learning.

^ This exactly. If surf is your game, then a superjet will do just fine with a few mods. Quick advice: Buy a newer but PRE 08 superjet and just start to modify it as you learn. It's the best ski period. Eventually you can just swap to an aftermarket hull.

If you want it all done and have the cash, buy a prebuilt a/m hull ski with an a/m engine installed. Check the whole ski for sale section on here.

You can pick this up http://providence.craigslist.org/boa/4183963923.html

That's high in my area but Cleveland is a long way from MA. See if you can talk him down since the bigger more desirable 701 he has needs work to run.

That is a legit set up especially for your first boat. Figure out what's up with the engines if you talk to the guy. Make sure he has a running package with it. Note that the 650 and 701 motors require different carb jets.

Most of those parts will swap over to your aftermarket hull of choice. Do research here to figure out which one you want. Start by searching "aftermarket hull site:x-h2o.com" on google.

You'll want a b-pipe and a 9/15 hooker prop. You'll need to find a 94+ midshaft I believe as well. It looks like this ski has an RN superjet pole already shortened. You'll need the RN pole for your am hull.

AM hull with a propped b-pipe 701 driveline is the starting point for doing a backflip on flatwater.

buy ANY short AM hull, and I mean SHORT. If you are new then getting used to it will be not much different than getting used to any OEM hull.
Once you have purchased the hull and controls then buy or build the BEST powerplant you can afford right now. You can upgrade it as you go.
if you tell us your budget you will get more info that is tapered to YOU and not just random peoples ideas.
If your goal is FW BF you better start with an AM hull and go form there.
Cheap ones to look for Q8 (NOT A Q8 SKY, just a Q8) its a fairly light glass short hull that is super strong and will hold up to your learning curve. Another one is a ROK-R short glass light and strong.
BoB gen 3 glass or carbon is an option. In the lower price range this is what I would consider as options.
Motor and pump need to be Yamaha based so you can build on them as you go.

Maybe with a b pipe and a ported motor & footholds it would be more realistic for 2500..

sounds good bro, but 8k will get you started, keep an eye out for a reasonably priced hull, post up looking for Q8, ROK-R or a bob gen 3 in glass. My opinion as hull and hood only you should be able to get one for $3-4K. With pole and some other goodies $4-5k
$3-4k will get you a decent power train that you can build on. A buddy has a bilet DASA 850 fairly fresh and a COMPLETE 144 mag pump with propper prop for $3200
that leaves you pipr $600, carbs and intake $650 new can prolly find them cheaper and electrics with starter and bendix will prolly get you around $500, so if you build one you can be all in with a GREAT setup for $10,000. an AM short hull with 850 and skat mag power will flip you ALL DAY LONG if you supply the NUTS!

There's a lot more to the sport than backflips. You can spend $5k for an awesome rec boat and move on from there, or you can try to spend $15k chasing one trick.

My advice to you would be to not get crazy when you start out. Pick up a stock (or limited) RN superjet for $3-6k. Set it up to be versatile. -3 or so on the pole, quck steer turn plate, scoop style intake, modified stock ride plate and a racing ride plate, removable rear sponsons, and everything motorwise you can get that wont cause it to blow up at WOT (head, pipe, enhancer, lightened flywheel, reeds, etc). Such a boat would give you a great start for anything surf, you can try racing it some, and you can do a number of flatwater tricks. When you get bored, move into the niche you like (surf, flatwater, racing). The superjet will be fine for a long time surf riding or racing. You will need to move into a new hull sooner for flatwater, but all of your parts will move over into your new hull.

What may seem cool on youtube may not be all that great (for your personal riding style and budget). Get in with something clean and reliable that will upgrade easy in the direction you want to go.
