Need an opinion

I have a 97 round nose I'm going through and fully rebuilding, repainting cleaning up etc. Everything under the bond line seems to have no gel coat whatsoever, should have it gelcoated also or is there a better option?

How does the appliance epoxy do with stains from oil and fuel? I used rustoleum 2k epoxy primer on one of my skis engine compartments cause I picked it up for a couple bucks a can. It worked great. Now that I need to do 2 more skis I was looking for it again and found out it is $40 a can and my last ski took 3 cans. I wish I had bought more. I was thinking of using the 1k appliance epoxy but didn`t want to risk finding out its not fuel or oil tolerant.

A lot of guys use appliance epoxy for engine bays, I just did one in white appliance not long ago. Stuffs tough as nails, haven’t had fuel/oil issues personally. I’m sure other people can chime in..

I like bilgekote for the engine bay. Nice glossy finish, resists staining, and seems to hold up well. Grease wipes right off the surface. It came in a quart can so had to brushed on which made for nice thick coating.
I painted my SXR bilge white with TotalBoat TotalBilge. I love how it looks, but it took almost a solid month for the paint to harden in August heat and humidity. It's now rock hard and everything just wipes away.

I painted my SXR bottom white with Rustoleum Epoxy 3 seasons ago. It's now wearing off, most likely due to beaching. It's cheap, and I would do it again. My buddy painted his Superjet Black at the same time. I think his is holding up better since he doesn't ride as much as me.

Just a side note, they were not gelcoated from the factory, just painted below the bondline. If i remember correctly, someone said it was Imron paint.

All SMC hulls are painted with some kind of truck/aircraft paint. The MFGs dont spend time/money to prep the surface so the paint tends to flake off. Single stage Imron is excellent for a hull bottom but expensive. You can find generic polyurethanes that are cheaper. That appliance stuff seems to be good for a rattle can budget.

I don't think gelcoat will stick to the SMC, also kinda seems like gelcoat sucks, the gelcoat is less flexible than the underlying fiberglass so you end up with a bunch of little hairline cracks in the gelcoat.

If you're looking for nice, I would be looking at automotive paint, two part, sprayed with a gun. If you're looking for "looks pretty decent" for low buck I would be doing the appliance "epoxy" (it's not actually epoxy, but if it sticks and holds up who cares)

I use to use Dupont Nason Series - Single Stage Urethane (Poly???) This is their series for Work trucks!!!!!! (Had dump truck on the cans and advertisements!) It was pretty inexpensive.

Kawi SXR's are Gelcoat over SMC. They chip really easy!

I used US Composites 3:1 epoxy mixed with graphite ( I wanted black) and aerogel. Has turned out to be indestructible and impervious to gas and oil. Rolled it on with a foam roller. Takes a little experimenting to get the finish you want. Small changes in ratio of epoxy to filler make big changes in final texture. I was pretty much equal parts epoxy (base) to graphite (filler) by VOLUME, not weight. And the slightest bit of aerogel. This is how it turned out. And epoxy bonds great to a properly prepped surface.

Thanks everyone for the opinion. I'm gonna have a professional gel the tophalf and handle below the bondline myself with some type of polyurethane paint .

I figure you can't make it too nice down there if u wanna do more than sit and look at it huh .

I just embrace the "beat up old superjet look" myself. The fun part is the rainbow of colors sanded down by the beach that shows what previous owners did. Lol
