Need help deciding which used SJ for first time rider

Nice deal! Don't need a case, toss a cool one and a handshake :)

First lesson: learn how to get on in deep water :) Hint: elbows and forearms on the gunnels, forearms in line w gunnels to push down while popping a knee in the tray.

Oh yeah - when you fall - don't let go!

Welcome aboard!

Enjoy.
Plan to spend some time in the water. If not, your not trying hard enough. Your first attempts at standing up will look like you are taking a dump. Try standing up straighter and not have a death grip on the handles. Initially having your feet separated with one foot more forward than the other will be more stable.
Another coucher converted!

Thanks everyone, I can't say enough how much I appreciate everyone's input in this thread, it really brought a lot of perspective on what I was looking for and saved me a lot money in the end.

The kicker is that I have an international business trip I'm supposed to leave on Friday for 10 days in Hong Kong but the typhoon looks like it may cancel everything. Hurricane Florence is taking up all the headline news but look up "Mangkhut Typhoon", sustained 220 km/h (140 mph) winds now THAT is a wicked storm. If not then I will be on a 15 hour flight on Friday thinking about the ski the whole time... OK and maybe the wife and kids but probably mostly the ski :) I'm going to try and put in another hour or so tomorrow when I pick it up since the seller lives right on the lake. I guess I need to ditch the thick nylon PFD and get a neoprene vest and some footwear since the stock tray mat was way more slippery than I thought.

Don’t diss the nylon vests. The actual PWC side entry are nylon but the big thing is the chest is double thickness for when the handpole sucker punches you in the chest. Also I couldn’t imagine riding a stand up without shoes.

I meant the big bulky zipper down the middle ones that most people use on sit down skis. I borrowed the sellers vest when I test rode but will definitely need something with the sides more open since my old one covered part of the shoulder and doesn't allow full arm rotation. I just ordered a 2016 Jet Pilot Apex off ebay similar to the one in your picture. I'll have to go try on some neoprene ones in person but the Jet Pilot seems to come in either S/M or L/XL so hopefully it will fit.

I ride with the zipper front vest with 2 straps around the front. It doesn't limit any movement or hinder anything and its a softer neoprene that feels great.

Well, I made it to Hong Kong about 8 hours before the Cat 5 Typhoon hit on Saturday but the jet ski gods must be watching over me because of all things in the world, this "waterwear" shop is across the street packed full of ski vests.

I got these for ~$9 and would love to buy a couple vests if I had the space for it. I'm not familiar enough to determine which brands are legit and which are a ripoff but I guess it doesn't matter either!

Nice! Those will get you started - I've gone through a cpl shoes until I found what I like. How was the weekend?

Speaking of shoes - I have a pair of lightly worn Body Glove 3t max size 9 up for grabs to anyone who wants them (just cover shipping). I wear a 9.5 and they fit fine. Pm if interested

How was the weekend?

I was on the 22nd floor of the hotel and it started swaying during the wind gusts, it literally felt like I was on a boat. I figured if it was going to collapse there's no point standing around on the Ground floor so I kept drinking until it stopped.

Just when this trip couldn't have been any more bizarre starting with a Typhoon and ending with me meeting Floyd Mayweather Jr on top of "The Peak" taking pictures of the city right in the middle of a tourist trap. His bodyguards wouldn't let me take a picture with him but he heard my American accent and said "whats up" or something like that as he walked right past me. It looks like he's on a promo tour in Asia right now before the Pacquiao fight. Anyway, I fly back tomorrow and will take pictures of the ski to bring this thread back to the original topic. I'm sure I'll have a million questions.

OK, sorry for the delay but here's some pics. When I went back to pick the ski up the seller forgot that he had a Jetsetter ski cart down in the basement so he threw it in as well! I was going to make one out of a Harbor Freight dolly and some 2x4 but this is much nicer and keeps the ski nice and high to work underneath. Ebay is having a 15% off sale today so I just ordered a 0 degree bar, ODI grips, a JEGS 5-gallon jug and Mikuni rebuild kits for when the time comes. This ski has hardly ever been touched and was winterized back in 2015 when he quit riding it and pushing 8 years old so I'm assuming the carbs may need some attention regardless. I plan to ride it as much as possible before winter but wish it was Spring already!
