Need help removing handlepole

Alright so I'm trying to figure out the best way to remove my stock handlepole so I can cut it down.

I understand how to remove the throttle and steering cable, but I dont know what to do about the start/stop switch.

It looks like I have to disconnect it from the inside and run the wires out through the top of the handlepole.

I just dont understand how you get the plug assembly through the black rubber piece at the base of the handlepole. :dunno: Do you have to cut the plug off and then splice it back on?

Thanks:biggthumpup:

do not cut the plugs off!!!! just remove the cable tie where the grommet is at the bottom of the pole in the bracket area . then spray it with silicone spray and it will make pulling the connectors easy to pull through

Your black rubber piece has a rubber accordian-like collar around it. Once you move the collar out of the way, the 4-hole black rubber piece has slots on the side of each hole to allow you to slide the cables/wires out. Then just pull them up through the pole. Unless there is something I am missing something, this is very easy to do. Don't forget to disconnect the white and black plastic connectors for the ignition switch near the carbs or electrical box.

You don't have to remove all of that to chop the pole down if you use rivits to put it back together. The first time I cut my pole down I used a hack saw and cut it right at the bottom bracket. (not all the way through) Then layed it down on the hood and removed the old fiberglass then preped the pole with a dremmel and reinstalled it with epoxy and rivits.

But the 2nd time I used bolts to reattach it and took the pole off to have the bottom bracket fixed

yeah, dont remove the pole, just cut it where it slides into the base, pull back, dig out the foam and remains, clean up, use a dremel , rough up the inside of the bracket, and the bottom of the pole, they glue the pole back into the lower bracket, rivet and your done, 1.5" shorter!

The reason I'm removing the pole is so that I only have to bring the pole back to Alabama and not the whole ski. Shortening the pole is going to be my project between now and Xmas break when I'll be back in Florida and be able to install the shortened pole back on the ski and do some riding.

I plan on taking 1.5'' off of the top and bottom so it will be a -3 pole.

Between that and the wamiltons shortened turnplate with 0Deg bars that I just installed I think thats good for about -5'' total which I think is sufficient.

cutting the handlepole already?!?!! i thought you were gonna be ridin!

Well Im heading back to sweet home alabama today so I wont be riding again until Im home for xmas break. Im just glad I got some good riding in over the break.

After riding in the surf this week with my ski I realized how much I needed a shortened pole. Tim saw a normal jump turn into a backfilp in about 2.5ft of water. :banghead:

If your going with a shorter turn plate and choping the pole, I would just try taking 2" off the bottom and trying that, once you remove you cannot add if the pole is too short.

There is no logical reason to remove from both ends, plus at the steering side it is curved for a reason, ergonamics......... if your gonna shorten, do all from the bottom........

Sounds good to me. Less work always sounds great:biggrin: .

After reading some threads about shortening the pole this is the steps I have come up with:

1. Drill out rivets from the bottom of the pole.
2. Remove pole from base (will the pole just slide out or do I need to break it lose somehow?:dunno)
3. Cut desired length off the bottom of the pole
4. Clean bottom of pole and base
5. Rough up the bottom of pole and base
6. Apply 2 part epoxy to bottom of pole and base and then insert pole into base. (Can I just use the 2 part west systems resin for this?)
7. Drill holes for new rivets
8. Insert new rivets
9. Let dry
10. Go ride the $hit out of it and break the pole so you can justify buying an aftermarket pole.

it wont just slide out unless already loose!!!!!!!! you could use a hack saw and go ahead and cut it at the base, pull away then chisel/pry the rest out, I dont know about using west systems for that, I have used JB Weld and Marine Tex, would stick with those two.
