Super Jet Need help with a buddies ski

Sorry for the wall of txt but the more info the better.

So he bought this ski as part of a package deal a few months ago. It is a '91 701 square with a Bpipe, msd enhancer, single stock carb (not sure of jetting) and some handling mods.

The first two times out it ran like a top, no issues. In total have prolly ran 1.5 tanks through it since purchased. The last two times we have taken it out however it is having a progressivly worsing problem.

The first day it had the issue he ran it for a good 45mins to an hour before it started. He was running at about 3/4 throttle when the engine cut out and he went over the handle bars. It started right back up (after re-priming it) but after that if you tried to give it more then 3/4 throttle the engine would cut out and either die or almost die if you were quick and just barely feathered the throttle.

It progressivly got worse from there on out, anything past 1/2 throttle would kill it..then 1/4...we ended up babying it back to the launch at about 3mph (we actually got it back to the launch by priming it while it was running every time it started to die). Once out on the trailer the ski would die if you pinned the throttle so the problem is not only when its under load.

This ski still had the stock fuel filter on it and the plugs looked pretty old as well so i swapped in a new fuel filter and plugs (BR8ES) hoping that it was a fuel supply issue and the plugs were just for good measure.

So today we took them out again. I started it up at home and it started up and reved perfect with no issues.Once in the water it ran well for about 10minutes before the same problem started and it followed the same progression...3/4,1/2,1/4...and then could barely baby it in. But when it did die we didnt need to prime it...would just start back up.

So here are my thoughts so far...the fact that if we prime it when it started to die seems like the problem is before the engine since it seems to run fine if it has fuel (from primer)...but the fact that it gets worse with time is kind of throwing me.

I also thought it might be vapor lock and plan to look at his breather tubes and maybe swap out his fuel pickup.

It seems to me like when you hit the throttle its not getting enough fuel with the increase air flow and that is killing it...but why is it getting worse with time?

I also plan to check spark on the plugs tomorrow but again I dont think that is the issue.

I am really hoping it is not a heat issue in the electronics...

Also if it matters we are riding in 50-60 degree air / 38-40 degree water. Both skis are single cooling with no restrictors.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Carburation/Exhaust/Electrical

>> all fuel lines conected right way ? clean carburator-internal filter/external filter /lines/make sure check valve tank is working

>> Run ski, if same symptoms take hood off and run without hood >> possible exhaust leak

>> Cut back spark wires, measure stator, disconnect heat sensor

just a couple of things i would look into

Thanks for reponses so far, how do I check the check valve in the tank?

Not sure where heat sensor is or how to disconnect it.

Im a little confused on the cut back spark plugs wires and measure stator.

Thanks!

I had the same problem in my 650 SJ last summer. Twist open the fuel cap, if you hear the pressure release, the check valve is good. My problem ended up being the internal fuel filter on the carb. I soaked my filter in a plastic bottle with some clean fuel (repair done on the shore at the lake). Got all the trash out of the filter, reinstalled and rode with no other problems.

that'd be the first thing I'd check

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 701s use BR8HS plugs being that they are smaller in the dome. I've seen BR8ES used and the piston closes the gap.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, gonna work on it tomorrow and hopefully will be able to water test it Sunday. Snowing right now =/

Not sure on the plugs Dirty...I have run the BR8ES's in my last few skis.

There's no doubt that with a stock head you should be running the H plugs. Aftermarket heads with domes are thicker and therefore require the extended length E plugs.

Correct the plug issue first, then look at the carb internal fuel filter and check the tank's check valve. Also check the fuel selector switch to see if that is plugged up.

The check valve lets air in, but does not allow gas vapors out. Try to blow through it both ways and make sure it's working. If it's not letting air in then the carb's fuel pump is starving.

If those don't work, then I think the next most likely problem is a bad stator thats falling down once it gets hot...

Finally had a chance to dig into his ski today.

Swapped out the check valve because air was freely flowing both ways. Broke down the carb and the internal filter was about 99% full of :):):):). I don't know how any fuel was even getting through it. Cleaned it out and put it all back together and spliced a fuel filter onto the reserve line. For some reason it did not have one when he bought it and that would explain why the carb filter was full of crap.

Going to try to get out tomorrow to test it and i will report back with the results.

Thanks again for all the help guys...hoping the check valve and internal filter will fix it...if not it cant have been helping lol.
