Need opinions for a tool I'm developing (engine temp)

Hello all,

So I need a little input here to see if this "tool" i'm working on will be worth the while, (if anyone likes it hell I will sell them when i'm finished)

It has to do with the engine temperature and a good way to read it live so you can accurately adjust the water cooling flow to your engine to always maintain a wanted temp, (mostly for guys that go from warm summer lakes, then go out for an ocean shred every once and a while)

What you would do is drill/tap your existing engine head, then screw in a brass insert with a thermometer in it
(placing the drilled hole as centered between the two pistons as you can yet not directly in between the spark plugs or els you may hit the domes)

Then the sensor would run to a nice back lit LCD display (yes very waterproofed) and read a live temp along with a recorded max temp.

You would also have a physical valve on your water in line from your pump so you can restrict the flow if needed in cold water.

Would anybody use this if we were to figure out what a good head temp would be? again it's reading the water temp IN the head, not the temp of the metal itself.

Also I could run other sensors like an exterior lake water temp sensor, or even a lap timer to the LCD with little extra programming. lol

Let me know if this sounds interesting to you guys here on X

I can honestly say that after 25yrs + of riding and working on my own skis, I would not buy this. I've ridden every temp from ice cold to steaming hot water, without adjusting the cooling.

OP, I have ridden the same places as you. the freshwater warmer lakes over here in western Washington and then down at Grayland in the surf. I have never changed anything to maintain ideal temperature and the ski has always ran fine. We are talking about 20* of difference in the peak of summer, the cost/time/hassle does not equal the benefit in my opinion...

Now, for someone who NEEDS the most from their ski, like some pro racers, they might benefit from this..but then again you can just get temp strips, stick them on the cylinder, and adjust a restrictor as necessary..the process is already fairly simple

fair enough, I here ya their if it seems like it's not a big issue then I wont worry about it, just a thought I had in my head. if i could make a nice little LCD display would their be anything particular that you guys would like to see on it? I can make it display just about anything you'd like?

ps: thanks for the input guys

I too used to ride a variety of water temps in the same week at times. I adjusted my cooling with ball valves for the varying conditions. I find it prudent with billet cylinders, as my last billet motor I didn't do it because I always rode 80+ water temps. When I moved and hit the 50 degree water my motor just wouldn't warm up. I don't think you ever want to restrict water from pump, rather adjust the flow overboard. Feel and the temp strips seem to be satisfactory and usually you get used to the ball valve settings and get close. I like your idea but I don't really see a market for it as most people don't know or don't care about proper operating temps, those that do already have a good system in place.

I agree with everything already said but you know there will always be a few data heads that will love the idea so why not go ahead and put together a few kits? My only advice would be to stay away from drilling holes and make it so it can be added inline with the water line leaving the head. It would take seconds to splice it in and go for a rip to dial in your temp and then you can remove it just as quick. It's good information for some but it's not necessarily something that needs to be online all the time.
