Need some help... out of ideas.

Our kawi sxi 750 is giving us fits. It all started when the cdi went out and started backfiring everywhere. Got that fixed, sounded great on the trailer, didn't run right in the water. Pulled it out, rebuilt both carbs with new rebuild kits and fixed a air leak and runs great on the trailer, doesn't run in the water. Got that fixed, and it ran good for a few minutes then the pisser water starting steaming and the overheat sensor shut it down... (we thought). Went home and blew air through all hoses ect, put it in the lake today, and still doesn't run right. We tried bypassing the overheat sensor, but does the same thing. It gets really hot, like can't touch the pipe. It will run fine and sounds awesome on the trailer. It will run fine all day long and stay cool on the water hose forever. Its bogging down, getting hot, and shutting off in the water..... what is ou guy's thoughts>????????????/ I'm out of ideas. :aargh4::aargh4::aargh4::soapbox::soapbox::aargh4::aargh4::aargh4:

Always just this close
If you have made sure all the lines are clear and that they are hooked up correctly. (you said it was all stock, did YOU have it running and then it died? Previous owners may have put a new or rebuilt engine in and never used it to find out it was hooked up wrong)

But like i said IF cooling lines are clear and setup properly, I had similar symptoms on my 85 550 when I had a bad head gasket. Cheap and easy part to replace/test.

Good luck

Come to think about it, i did have the head off to put it a "milled" head, but ended up lowering my compression, so i put my stocker back on. It was a new gasket when i tried to swap, but then put my stock one back on. I think it ran fine a few times since then though. I will try out a new head gasket.... Who on here is the member that sells all those gaskets? Or should i just roll a OEM gasket?

If it runs fine on the hose then that tells me there's a block between the exhaust manifold and pump. I would yank those hoses off completely and check them for blocks/cracks. Might also want to pull the fitting on the pump and check it as well.

If it still overheats, I would try bypassing the stock cooling lines. Plug the stock lines and run a dedicated hose through the bilge fitting temporarily and see if the problems disapears (hopefully you have a bilge pump). I blew out all my lines at the beginning of the summer and got nothing...replaced all the hoses and my overheating problem went away.

Might want to check your pipe mounting bolts as well. If you have a slight exhaust leak, it'll cause your engine and pipe to heat up really quickly.

Well tonight me and another board member went through my carbs again, and installed a high comp head. It sounds good on the trailer, no way to really tell til we get it in the water. I may just go get a kiddy pool to set it in and tie it to the house or something.

No, i'm not running a bilge, just the stock siphon for now. I am gonna bilge pump both of my skis this winter. What do you bypass.... like from what? Its getting water out the pisser, not as much as my sj though. Its never put out as much....

If it wasn't the head gasket, I am guessing the water line running back to the pump has something stuck in it. Snake it out before you go.

I had the same problem a couple months ago with my sxi pro running hot... Turns out the water line running back to the pump had some junk in there so i pulled it off and blew through it and i was all good back on the water :brap:

Well started working on the boat tonight after work cause i am fed up with my superjet being a whore on the weekends. I triple checked the cooling lines... and not at all blocked. I noticed it was gettting alot of fuel in the cylinders then every once in a while it will fire. So i pulled the plugs to look at the spark, and it is extremely faint. I din't know what it was supposed to look like, so i pulled my sj's plugs and they were bright and consistent. So i think i may have a bad e box? Sound like this could cause my symptoms?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this thread... Here is the line that we're saying we believe is clogged. It's the metal tube that goes into the hull and comes out in the back. Best thing I can think of to do is grab an audio wire or something with an end on it and feed the wire through the tube. The wire will fit through fine but if the plug hangs up on something then you'll know something big is stuck. Additionally I would remove the rideplate and remove that fitting from the pump and visually look in there. Then reinstall it with teflon tape on the threads.

Here is the a picture of which line it is going out in the back. It's the one my thumb is on.

A weak spark won't cause the ski to overheat but it could make it run rough off idle. The kawi sparks aren't that strong as it is but if you feel it should be better, then you can always pull the boot off and trim the spark plug wire back a half inch and rewire it. Couple of the wires could be corroded or broken and this will solve that problem as well.

mxkris: Cut your plug wires back 1 inch. Just take the plug boots off, cut them and put them back on.

jfw: Blow an air compressor through that line. It WILL blow out whats in there.

I checked all my wires today, and they all look new. No corrosion. I took my ride plate off and blew air and stuff through that exact hose. I guess i will try to run a cable through it as well tomorrow. Thanks for the help. I am trying to bum a known good electrical box and test it out before i buy one....

I did that today, blew just as hard out the other end as it was coming out the compressor.
