Other Need some opinions (shipping issues)

In all my time of buying and selling stuff here and elswhere online I have NEVER encountered this issue. Call me lucky but its true.

I sold some small parts to a guy on another site. I shipped them on 10/19/10 like 9am and I shipped just regular USPS like always. He is in CT. and a week later he says "hey bro, how did you ship my parts, I dont have them. Do you have a tracking# ". I replied USPS and told him I dont ship small parts with a tracking# but I do have a receipt showing the shipment to your city on that day and the shipping cost.
I said to give it some time assuming it will eventually hit his mailbox or return to me. Well, here we are a total of almost 3 weeks later and they havent hit me or him.
I have had packages come back but never one lost. What are the odds I wrote my own damn address wrong as well as his, NEAR NONE right?

So they disappeared into thin air. What do I do? I emailed him a copy of the receipt but I guess he could say "you coulda shipped to anyone in Hartford, CT." and I guess he could be correct.

Bottom line is I shipped them, am I responsible for them until they hit his door step or is my obligation fullfilled? Should I be paying to track $35 worth of items, these things weigh 6.8 oz total with the packaging and shipping was $2.24 and to track them will prolly double that. If I do that on every little shipment I would have to raise my pricing which defeats my initial purpose of getting parts to people CHEAPER. I am by no means getting rich off this stuff. Just figured why not get some deals and pass them on. Check out my listings, nothing is overpriced and most are underpriced, that was the objective here.

Any suggestions would help. I know what I need to do here but what about future. Track and raise pricing or just take my chances to keep cost low and hope this is isolated? Lets be honest, I could be getting taken here and in future if I opt. to cover the parts to everyones door step.

opinions needed.

Refund him his money and always ship UPS even on little items that way you have a tracking number and you aren't shipping through a government owned business.

i almost always ship usps priority. and i think a tracking number is only like 1$ more. you know its only 35$ and if it was on pwctoday all those loosers do is look for reasons to start shlt and smut someone up. personally i would chalk it up and just refund the cat and avoid all the drama. one time i shipped a gasket to canada. he never recieved it. about4 months later it ebded up in my mailbox

I am sure the outcome here would be refund his $$, but shiupping UPS on 4-5 items a day is CRAZY from a cost standpoint. That shipment would have cost $6.50 UPS minimum and that cost has to be passed on somewhere (his price is now $40 instead of $35 shipped to his door). My goal is to keep costs DOWN.
UPS also looses shipments and it is an act of congress to be reimbersed when they do. Ask ADA about that, They lost $1550 worth of parts for them and it took MONTHS to resolve. Just had a guy ship me a pump FedEX ground from MI and today makes a week, still no pump, tracking says tomorrow. Had USPS shipments come in from Calif., FL and MO. all shipped after the FedEx shipment. So USPS is better in some ways.

Oh I know I have to reimberse this. Just trying to figure out how to handle the potential of this happening in future. I guess $1 per shipment at average of 4 shipments a day this issue is covered in about a week and a half. So if I pay insurance or pay for the USPS errors either way its gonna cause a price increase. Bottom line I gues is everything just went up LOL.
I do not see how this :):):):) didnt make it to ONE OF THE 2 addresses ON THE FREAKN PACKAGE WTF.

whether you get the tracking number or not - you should insure your packages if you are going to ship USPS and pass the cost on to the customer.

USPS tracking is crap anyway - it's not real time like UPS/Fedex...only shows pickup and delivery.

Did you ship through paypal? Or did you go down to the post office?

I always always at least get a shipping confirmation number from USPS.

I ship a lot of small stuff 1st class mail USPS (under 13 oz) and since I do it through paypal they automatically tack on the shipping confirmation number. You don't even have the option to remove it.

I've had very good luck with USPS and UPS, but have had multiple problems with Fedex. Another thing I never do, unless the recipient is also in Southern California, is ship USPS Parcel Post. I had a package take 5 weeks to arrive one time when I shipped parcel post.

Raise the price and ship with tracking #s for "expensive" items and ship cheap and "self insure" on the low cost items. You certainly have to look at it from all angles.

We ship using UPS exclusively to the tune of about $1,000,000 in freight charges a year. We have VERY few problems. Several years ago we analyzed our claims versus the amount of insurance that we paid on the shipments. Our insurance costs were about 10X what it the claims cost. Guess what, we now self insure and we "eat" any problems ourself. No dicking around with UPS claims (about 1 in 10 are a PITA).
Insurance is a huge moneymaker for UPS, but they are the best, by far.

I always ship ups and always immediately supply the buyer with the tracking number. Always! I dont care if its a $2.00 part or $200.00 dollar part. I also keep a very sharp eye on when the part is recieved and ask the buyer for feed back on the part. Its a little extra work but it is very worth it in the end. I wish every seller would do this.

I agree... with selling used parts for me most parts cost less than $100 and thus gets free insurance from UPS, but for my USPS packages, I usually only add insurance if the item is $35 or more. Anything below that I'll just eat the cost if there ends up being a problem.

UPS tip - Insurance is "free" for the first $100 declared value. After that it is .70 per hundred with a minimum charge of $2.10 ($300 value). So, either declare less than $100 or $300 or more.

You should register online with the USPS web site because it's cheaper and it includes free delivery conformation along with the history of all your shipping transactions.

That's true and media mail if you're a real cheap azz but if you make you own labels using the web site, you won't have to stand in those long lines at the post office.

100% agree. I'll eat a buck or two in shipping cost before I drive down to the post office to stand in line.

When shipping to some countries, you can't get shipping insurance online I've noticed. The only way to have it insured is to go down to the post office. Happened to me once or twice, and once again, only for select countries. Only one I can think of off the top of my head is Russia.

And about the only other reason I can think of that I ever go to the post office is if I'm mailing something USPS express mail. I print the label online but I like to go down to the post office to hand it to a worker and receive a receipt of when my package is guaranteed to arrive.

X2 agreed and tracking is always automatically sent to the buyers email. Delivery conf. is also free when you ship through paypal. When you ship parcel post USPS they say 2-9 days. I only do USPS Priority and it comes w/free delivery conf. If the buyer specifically wants parcel post to save a few buck then i explain what could happen.

It's been said but I agree, delivery confirmation is a must. The guy totally could've gotten the stuff and you'd never know it.
