I'm looking to put a big, lockable trailer box on the tongue of my trailer so I don't have to put everything in the trunk. It needs to be big enough for a 5 gallon gas can, tool box, 12" spare tire, small cooler, and a rubbermaid tote full of dripping wetsuit, helmet, PFD, etc.

Who's using what, and which seems best as far as theft deterrence & durability? What about seperate compartments in the box? Any pictures of mounting methods? Thanks.:thinkerg:

I'm using a diamond plate box I picked up from Northern Tools. It holds just about everything you listed including the gas jug. Mine is not even the largest one they offer.

hey skidaddy I'm running a plastic box on my trailer. I'm pretty sure you've seen it before.

Dan, how is that attached to the trailer?

2 big u-bolts with backing plates. i know it doesn't look sturdy, but it really is very sturdy.

the only problem is that when I was towing it with my dad's avalanche with the tailgate open I turned too tight and the tailgate hit the box, bent it over, and busted up the plastic where the backing plates mount to.

it still is more than sturdy enough and once I put a wooden board down over the broken plastic it will be indestructible.

I have the Lowes one as well.

I keep 3 5gal gas jugs in there, a gallon of oil, WD40 and other sprays, spare light for the trailer, spark plugs,..............
At the end of the day I throw all my wet gear in there which makes things tight but not impossible.

The factory lock isn't much of a lock but it's there and it keeps honest people honest.

I have it mounted on a piece of plywood using decking screws for extra stability and bolted to the trailer with 2 large U-bolts that I got at a trailer place. It's sturdy enough for me to sit on and is stable up to 125MPH (darn speed governors).
