Freestyle New Challenge

What's Up?

I am about to purchase a free-style ski
I have never been on one before, but am excited to learn
I am looking for speed, agility, and most importantly tricks

I had a 96' Yamaha Wave Raider 1100 Triple when I was younger and pushed it to the limits - Now I am looking for a new challenge...

I have a few questions:

  • What brand do you buy - Yamaha or Kawasaki or Other
  • What MODs are necessary out of the gate
  • What MODs are necessary long term
  • Is it better to buy new or used
I would appreciate any advice... Thanks!

If I was starting out brand new I'd truthfully find a good, used RN superjet. Yes it is true that I have been riding Kawis since 1988 and love my modded Kawi 750sxi-pro, although being on this forum for such a long time, these screwy superjet disciples have me convinced that a SJ just may be a better freestyle ski and is a very good product.

IMO, handling mods are first, pump mods second and engine in third. So right off the bat; grate, rideplate, tubbies, steering, bars, handlepole (shortened). That should keep ya busy for a while.

BTW- Welcome son.

get a Yamaha
I prefer a squarenose (SN) over a roundnose (RN)
and a SN is a cheaper starter ski.
Avoid kawasaki (I have one so I know what I am talking about) and get a Yamaha!

Welcome to the X!!!!

Thanks for the insight guys...

Where is the best place to look for a used SJ? I live in Iowa, and freestyle is not very common. I have looked online, but must not be looking in the right spots...

Do you recommend trying it first before buying one; just to make sure you like it?

Can anyone give me a rough estimate on what this hobby is going to cost me - at least to start? Be gentle...

Finally, when purchasing handling MODS are there certain brands to go with?

  • Grate
  • Rideplate
  • Tubbies (I don't even know what these are)
  • Steering
  • Bars
  • Handlepole (shortened)
The way I see it; the only way to show up someone doing a back-flip on a wake board is to follow their boat and do it on a jetski - YEAH BABY

Try out www.searchtempest.com its a Craigslist search engine.

For a 701 SJ square that runs I think you'll be in the 1200-1800 range, probably 900-1500 for a 650. You'll find more of those, but I would keep a look out for a SJ with a 701 in it... 650's get old quick. For a Round nose SJ, 2500-4000. This is based on my recent research, i've been hunting for one or the other for my wife for awhile.
I would reccomed getting one with as many mods as you can afford (if you can find it one with mods). Ultimately you'll save money vs buying the parts etc.

Defintely reccomend riding anything you plan to buy before you buy it. I find it odd that you're ready to buy and have never ridden a stand up, but I imagine you'll be fine. You may only be able to ride on your knees for the test.

I ride a SuperFrk WannaBe
honestly you cant put a price on this sport. After you own one your addiction will take over. Especially for freestyle.

I think a round nose superjet will be a great starter ski. I have had 2 amazing square nose superjet but they were nothing like my round. It has the looks, and a great motor 61x-62t with dual carbs. A lot of us are still running the same carbs with modded motors. And that 62t is a great platform to build off of. Look on craiglist and on this site for skis to buy. Also pwctoday.com.

As for as mods I would shorten your pole by cutting it yourself and cutting your factory ride plate to a d-cut. Then get a intake grate and steering. I really enjoy my xmetal bars and shorty steering plate. you can purchase them from xmetalworks.com

here is a list of vendors you can get mods from
Jetmaniac- he is x-h20.com member
thrustinnovations.com
615freeride.com
xmetalworks.com
blowsion.com
wamiltons.com
fastelement.com

Just to name a few

Good luck and welcome to the x
