300/440/550 new guy checking in. :)

hey guys. ive been trolling around for a few weeks and finally decided to sign up. my names chad, im 23, i live in va beach and im new to stand ups. ive been racing dirtbikes for 20 years and found skis to be great cross training for racing. since i started riding my bosses ski a few times in the past year i bought my own. i have a 90 kawi 550sx that i havent gotten too familiar with yet. i bought it from a co worker who used to ride all the time and apparently its pretty trick.

he told me it has a bored over 650 reed engine from an x2 with a new head, exhaust, 38mm mikuni's, after market hood, quick steer turn plate, new bars, and a finger throttle. i dont know too much about skis yet, but im doing a lot of reading and trying to figure out what i have.

thanks a lot. if anyone knows anything about my ski that i dont or havent mentioned please let me know

not bad for 100$ !!

i would ditch the round body carbs. try to find a single square body mikuni single 44 or 46 (will require a different intake manifold) or if you want to stick with dual 38's the yamaha guys are always selling square 38's as a set cheap. they were the stock carbs on 62t yamaha motors. all in all the square body carbs are much easier to tune.

also, i had a team butch exhaust on an old 650 X2 that ripped pretty good, but if you ever find a factory pipe for the 650 kawi motor, i would snatch it up cheap and swap the butch for the factory pipe.

but for now, if it runs good, just ride it as it, and learn how to ride good. sooner or later you might outgrow the 550, then it will be time to find yourself a 701 powered superjet.

Thanks wright. I'll look into that. Once I get good enough on my ski I want to get something capable of flipping in the surf. I've been reading about big displacement engines and carbon hulls but I guess ill figure it out as I go

im picking up another 550 next week that has been sitting for around 15 years for free. as winter comes closer im thinking of making this one a flatwater freestyle ski. would it be worth it to do all the glass work on such an old hull? i have no idea about engines or pumps yet. im learning as i go right now.

save up for a superfreak then. i have a lot of time on my hands to read while im deployed, and the superfreak seems like the best all around hull from what i read. it will be my next big purchase!!!

Sorry for the late reply. The ski is currently in Richmond at my dads house. I haven't had any time to play with it so I let him take it for a while. I'll still be at WaveDaze for sure.

I live in vb off independence and haygood, near bayside high school.
