New head = Premature engine failure... ?

A stock pump FX1 will benefit much less from compression than the same engine in a SJ, especially with stock porting. The problem is, it has an 8500rpm pump with a 7000 rpm engine.

Reactions: mk1
Aftermarket Head = Higher Static Compression = More Cylinder Pressure
MSD Enhancer = More Aggressive timing curves = More Cylinder Pressure
Factory B-Pipe = More efficient combustion = More Cylinder Pressure

All of those things will decrease the life of your engine.

I have all three on an engine that's 20 years old without an issue, but you gotta pay to play, my old engine would probably live a longer life without the mods.

Neat , Are you still running with the original coil , or did you have to upgrade it.?

I was extremely paranoid about reliability and how a high compression head would affect engine life as well, especially since I was doing a fresh rebuild from the crank up. I bit the bullet and am running an ada girdled head with 35 cc domes, a b pipe, and a cdi with a raised rev limiter. Over 5 gallons of oil in this season with no issues. For safety precautions and since I've got it readily available, I mix 1 gal of 110 oct race gas to 4 gallons of 93 oct premium just to avoid the possibility of detonation when going WOT. Take Jetmaniac's advice and if all checks out, go for it. IMO I'd go for 35 cc domes..It made a night and day difference over stock for me. I was extremely pleased.

Didn't read all the posts.

I upgraded my stock motor to a full limited, including a pipe and head, which I then stuck a piston. A leak down test after failure showed a leaking base gasket. This was either due to age of the fact that I put the girlded kit on without changing the gasket.

In either of the above cases, a simple leak down test would have found this issue.

Also, after the piston failure, the motor was rebuilt, and the crank was found to have a weak bearing. So the crank was replaced preventatively.

The moral of the story here is that the pipe and head did not cause my motor to fail. The failing motor could not hold up to extra horsepower and 1000 more rpm. The motor was 10 years old, and was over due for inspection and maintenance.

Lastly, the mechanic Not to be named i mistakenly trusted to rebuild my motor was certified but not qualified. He tuned it too lean, and with too much compression.

The extra money is spent to bring it to harry of bad boys racing is some of the best money I have spent in the sport. A quality assembly and tuning is like none-other. I wish I would have started with harry, and have gone back with repeated positive results each time.
