"NEW" Kawi SX-X 160

I'm still waiting for a reasonable answer as to why they chose to create a standup yacht. The whole point of a standup was to be small, light, challenging to learn but extremely fun learning. I started out on a rental 440 with zero experience and loved it so much I became the most common regular at the rental place. It was a boat load of fun learning, not powerful at all but that's what made it fun because falling off didn't hurt at 27 mph lol. I think to promote more standup sales they need to go backwards in time, make them small and nimble, LIGHT, not this abomination of an ocean liner, and if possible get a little 2-stroker back in there. With the advances in 2-stroke tech now and electrical reliability, I'm sure they can do it. Learners need something easy, small, light and fun to learn on before going full scale. I would bet a Coke on making smaller units again that kids and adults could learn on and really have a lot of fun with would bring back a lot of attention and sales to the standup market. This push to abandon beginner models has something to blame for a dried up interest in standup skis.

Kawasaki and Yamaha both like to reuse old technology to death whenever possible , the engine they use is based on the ZX14R motorcycle engine , just as the older Yamaha M1 four strokes were based on the R1 motorcycle engines , that basic Kawasaki engine design has not changed much except for displacement and fuel injection since it was introduced in the GPZ900 motorcycle back in 1984 .

All manufacturers have abandoned two stroke technology , sorry that's a done deal and there is no going back.

Never say never...

Maybe but that article also says KTM might have the answer, problem is KTM just went bellyup.

Yeah but you know how it works, if there's real promise with the patents, someone else will make a slight change to it, pick up the rest and make it their own. Kawi showed enough interest to put their name on it so that says something about where the tech is at or where it's going.

Went to World Finals 2016, the SXR was introduced that same week. A friend who has been racing forever, use to work for Laser Jet told me from conversations about the New SXR about why it is big as it is. They hulls have to pass a "Float Test". With the weight of the new engine, in a smaller hull it failed. This hull size came about so it would pass sad test. I would imagine if the SJ came with the 1800 motor, it would be similar in size. But because the 1050 / TR1 Engine has a lighter weight, the hull is a bit smaller.

If they made a small beginner class ski though with a small motor that should pass no? I can see the point of the float test, and maybe the new standards of it require the hull to have a positive buoyancy vs. how the 2-stroke SuperJet would float but just barely bobbing at the surface. I saw a neat video of how they float like that but I can see how it would be just like a waterlogged driftwood. I'll try to find that video but it was kind of reassuring that the SJ wasn't going to torpedo down when subbed.

Kawi didnt have a smaller motor. They have the 12F and 15F platforms which are the same size if not mistaken.

Yes physical dimensions of the engines are the same.

Seadoo gets a lot of flack but they do wholly own Rotax which does nothing but design and manufacture engines , so if they need a new engine they can get it , even at that the engines are still used in multiple platforms and they were designed that way so that they could , the Seadoo 1503 is also used in the snowmobiles, the Ace 900 engines can be found in the Ryker three wheelers.

Seadoo BRP does have that Rotax 600 twin engine they could put in something if they wanted to , it's only 50 HP though.

Seems like all the A/M hull makers failed the "float" test. I know a kid who wants to remove the hood foam from his old X2. I guess some people have to learn the hard way.
