Super Jet New member, new sj

Hello everybody. I just picked up my first stand up and am extremely excited!

The good:
paid $200
bone stock 90 sj 650 that compression tested 140 and 145.
hull is in pretty good shape
bike ran and didn't leak water.

The bad:
dirty as hell, but that really isn't something I'm worried about.
Choke cable is broken, and a nipple for a primer line has been inserted where the line previously went in.
When it ran, it hesitated with large throttle input (cold motor?)

My thoughts were to first replace all fuel lines and other miscellaneous degradable lines. Then I'd take her out on the water and see what happens. I read the sticky about "so you just bought an sj", but most of that is for modification purposes. Right now I'm just trying to get it running (right). Any other things I should replace before I even hit the water?

Thanks

Welcome! Glad to see you got that Superjet. I saw it for $300...guess the guy wasn't too firm on price? Come out and ride with us at George Winter park on the Meremac...I think we are riding this weekend actually. Come out with a group of us that way if you have any issues we can help you out.

If you decide to fix the choke cable I have one from my old Square nose sitting in storage. Check out the Riding Groups section and click on the STL Group.

EDIT: Just reread that...if the carb already has the nipple for the primer then obviously a choke cable wont be helping you any. Get a primer setup...they work great and save your battery. If you need a primer I have a few laying around...would let one go cheap if we meet up! You would just need to pick up some small fuel line.

Will try seafoam and report back with picts before and after wash (planning to clean it down and remove fugly decals tonight). Have you ever gone out on the Mississippi? We test and tune a 96 xp and 97 sl1050 out there. Its pretty smooth in the dardeen slough, and plenty of decent waves in the main channel. Much calmer than the lake of the ozarks though.

Scale of 1-10, 10 being most difficult, what would you rank
1. pulling the pump and replacing wear ring & impeller
2. motor swap (701)
3. rebuilding the 650 carb

I've done the pump on the xp and helped with the pump on the sl1050, so I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing. Just wondering how work on this will compare to those bikes.

How much for that primer kit and where are you at?

welcome to the X! imo your going to be hooked shortly! i'd go with a 701 motor swap you can make a 650 pretty peppy mine blows past my friends 750sxi but a 701 motor is worth the bang! carb rebuild is easy just make sure you put the diapharmes in the right spot. pulling the pump was easy

the only heard part about the pump system is putting the driveshaft back into the mid house, but with 2 people u can do it in 10 minutes
carb rebuild is easy just make sure to tighten all your screws and follow the diagram specific to your carb ( coat all rubber components in 2-stroke oil before instal
701 swap- 4 hoses 4 bolts and opening up the ebox

run it and then run it some more. SeaFoam can save carb fiddling time. It works..
How do you go about putting seafoam in a carb'ed motor? Inject into the choke nipple? Mix with fuel (I'd think that would give a lean condition). Sorry to ask such a simple question, but I've only used it on fuel injected vehicles.
